Cancer centres across the country are raising vital funds for life-changing treatment with their latest fundraising challenge.
Maggie’s cancer centres throughout Great Britain are currently mid-way through their latest fundraising event which sees participants walk 300,000 steps in March.
The challenge ties in with Stand Up To Cancer, which raises money and awareness of the illness through TV shows.
The challenge is hosted on Facebook with dedicated groups for each of the centres and it is free to sign up.
Participants sign up by registering via their local Facebook group, receiving a free t-shirt after joining, allowing other members to easily identify each other.
Those taking part are encouraged to get their steps in any way they can, whether that’s on their daily lockdown walk, on the school run or simply dancing around the house.
If participants raise over £150 for their efforts, they will receive a commemorative medal as a thank you for their help and support for people battling cancer.
There are more than 30,000 people across the UK taking part in the challenge, which runs from 1-31st March. The centres rely on voluntary donations to support people living with cancer.
Speaking about the event, Head of Fundraising at Maggie’s, Samantha Booth, told Metro.co.uk: ‘We wanted a challenge that would raise funds to help people living with cancer, as we are funded by voluntary donations, but also one that would be accessible and encourage people to get outside in the springtime, while following all guidelines, and do something to help them feel a little fitter.’
Maggie’s Chief Executive, Laura, Lee, was awarded a Damehood in 2020 for her services to people with cancer. She explains that the pandemic has caused heightened levels of stress, fear and trauma amongst those living with cancer, but the centres remain open to help anyone who may need it during these even tougher times.
‘The doors of our 24 UK centres are open to offer vital practical, emotional and psychological support,’ Laura says. ‘we need families to know that they can come in and talk to our professional staff about the huge impact of the last year.’
