Nando’s is launching a plant-based burger made from a meat alternative.
While meat-free options have been on the menu for the while at the chain, this is the first time they’ve offered a dish that looks and tastes like chicken, but is completely plant-based.
The Great Imitator is made entirely from pea protein and will be available nationwide from tomorrow, 13 October.
The product is aimed at flexitarians who want to cut back on their meat intake rather than vegans.
Sadly, it is prepared on the same grills as the chicken and they cannot guarantee that there won’t be any cross-contamination.
It is available in a wrap, burger or pitta and all ingredients it is served with will also be plant-based. The cost will vary depending on what you order.
You’ll get four strips that are grilled to order and you can choose your PERi-PERi spice level, just like with the meat-based options.
Dawn Carr, Director of Vegan Corporate Projects, PETA, says: ‘PETA is delighted to have played a part in Nando’s journey to putting this delicious plant-based chicken on the table.
‘Nando’s can’t guarantee zero risk of cross-contamination, so it’s not calling it vegan, but all the ingredients in the burger and pitta versions are completely animal-free – right down to the mayo – we say these are an excellent choice.’
Other new items on the menu this October include the sweet potato wedges and the garlic PERinaise, which are also plant-based, and the PERi BBQ sauce.
