Coronavirus has made us far more conscious of our hygiene – and just how gross some of our pre-Covid habits truly were.
Take going to the supermarket to do the big food shop, for example.
Why did we ever pick things up willy-nilly and put them back on the shelves post-fondle? Why did we put things in our fridge and eat them for dinner without washing those grubby food items first?
And when it comes to the fiddly nature of opening one of those slippery produce bags – you know, the thin plastic ones next to fruit and veg that are frustratingly difficult to open – we’re suddenly horrified by the idea of licking our fingers to get a grasp on there.
Clearly others are too, as one mum has come up with a trick for opening bags without any saliva needed.
Kristy, a mum-of-two from Australia, wrote in the Aldi Mums Facebook group that she ties a hand sanitiser wipe to her trolley handle, then when it comes to opening bags she just uses the handy wipe to add some moisture to her finger.
‘If anyone struggles to open the produce bags like me, I’ve found a solution,’ she said.
‘On your way in, tie one of the sanitiser wipes to your trolley to moisten your fingertips! It’s so much easier than the ten-minute workout it usually takes to get them open.’
The hack has been a massive hit, receiving thousands of likes and comments from shoppers calling the idea ‘awesome’ and praising Kristy for ‘winning at life’.
Some said that rather than licking their finger, they just whip out some hand sanitiser gel and use that to moisten their hands and get the plastic bags open.
Basically, using hand sanitiser in any form to moisten your finger seems like a far more hygienic idea than licking, so we’re all for it.
Another option? Just ditch the plastic bags and bring your own reusable, washable bags to protect your fruit and veg.
You can buy fabric versions online that take up minimal space and are not at all fiddly to open, saving you from all the faff of licking or sanitising just to wriggle around some plastic.
