Can you feel that crispness in the air?

Autumn is finally here – and with it, comes this season’s baby names.

A new survey has revealed that many parents would consider naming their little one after something inspired by the colder months.

For instance, Branch, for a girl – which has increased in interest by 150% in 2020.

The research, which was conducted by Gigacalculator, analysed the top monikers on Nameberry.com, comparing rankings with overall interest, with the results presented to 2,185 survey participants (all of which are parents or parents-to-be).

It was then found that out of these participants 29% would be happy to give their baby an autumn-themed name – and they also ranked the suggestions.

When it comes to autumnal names, parents were inspired by the following; the month, month of conception, holidays such as Halloween, Thanksgiving, Dia de los Muertos, Eid etc., and the weather.

Colour palettes are also a huge influencer.

Rust topped the list for boys (increase of 88%), while Sorrell, which roughly translates to reddish brown in French (increase of 75%) and Radley (with English origins meaning red meadow) was a hit among girls.

Other cute names include Birch, Crispin, Omri, Bruna, Saffron and Kiona – and although the names were split by gender in the research, they could work for either.

Many of the names also have ties to old traditions or history, such as Samhain, a Gaelic word that describes the end of harvest season and Saffron, which has links to Old French, Arabic and Persian, where it means gold leaves.

Thankfully, one of the biggest signs of autumn, the return of the Pumpkin Spiced Latte, has not made the list – though we almost wish it had.
