National Fish and Chip Day is that one day a year specifically dedicated to celebrating the great British seaside favourite of battered fish wrapped up in a paper package with a generous portion of salt, vinegar and chips.
Fish and chips were first served together as a dish around 1860, but their origin is contested. In London, the Malin family claims to be first, as do the Lee family in Manchester.
Wherever the tradition came from, the dish has been quintessentially British ever since and so important to the UK that Winston Churchill wouldn’t ration the dish during WWII due to fears of triggering widespread discontent.
Here’s when to mark National Fish and Chip Day with an honorary portion of fish and chips and where you can buy the best in the UK – according to the annual Fish and Chip awards.
When is National Fish and Chip Day?
If you fancy a portion of fish and chips today then you’re in luck because you’ve got the perfect excuse.
Today, Friday September 4, is National Fish and Chip Day.
Usually, National Fish and Chip Day is marked on the first Friday of June, but due to the global pandemic, this year the day was postponed.
Instead, back in May the National Federation of Fish Friers announced: ‘ Following the resounding success of last year’s National Fish and Chip Day, and in response to the Government’s recent announcements, we are absolutely delighted to say that our celebration of the nation’s favourite dish will go ahead in 2020, but a little later than planned on Friday 4th September!’
Who won the Fish and Chip Awards 2020?
Every year, Seafish – a Non-Departmental Public Body (NDPB) that supports the seafood sector in the UK – hosts the National Fish and Chip Awards to crown the best of the best in the fish and chip industry.
In 2020, the National Winner was The Cod’s Scallops in Wollaton, Nottingham, Nottinghamshire.
Shap Chippy in Penrith, Cumbria came in second while Fish & Chips @ Weston Grove in Chester, Cheshire took third place in the competition.
