Woman transforms her balcony into lockdown haven

If there’s anything lockdown has given us, it’s time to take on the DIY projects that we’ve been putting off.

We have seen a mum transform boring doors in her home into shaker style with just £40 and a man create his very own pub in his back garden, disguised as a summer house.

The latest project is a balcony makeover, with a woman taking a bland and – let’s be honest, dull – space and changing it into what can only be described as a haven.

Laila Abbas shared the before and after photos on Twitter and people are loving the design, with the tweet racking up over half a million likes and 53,200 retweets in the space of two days.

‘Almost died making this happen,’ she wrote. ‘Here’s my balcony before and after.’

In a follow-up tweet, the 28-year-old woman explains that she almost fell off the balcony while hanging the fairy lights, while standing on the back of her new outdoor couch.

All in all, the transformation cost £405.

‘It was all about $500 (£405), from Wayfair and IKEA, and took about two hours to complete,’ Laila, from Arlington, Virginia, tells Metro.co.uk.

‘I love it! And honestly, people’s reactions caught me completely off-guard.

‘It was such an overwhelming and relatively positive response. I’m glad that everyone was able to appreciate my balcony as much as I do!’

However, some people commented that the wall looks different in the first photo, questioning whether the images were real.

‘Did you trim this part of the column too and add brick mortar??’, asked one person.

‘The column also gets thinner towards the top are you telling lies mate these are two complete different apartments.. still nice tho.’ [sic]

But Laila explains that the before photo is actually of a different balcony in the same building, which is why the design of the walls differ slightly.

She says: ‘It’s super frustrating, I forgot to snap a before picture so the photo I used was from my tour of the building before I moved in.

‘The balcony looks exactly the same and it’s the same layout, so I didn’t think it would be an issue.

‘Next thing I know people are accusing me of lying or stealing pics.’

Despite some negative comments, the project is a big success with others saying they ‘love’ it.

‘It looks like you’ve made a wonderful escape in a small space!,’ tweeted one person.

Someone else said: ‘Went from…”bleh” to “and here we have a luxury space where you can relax & take in the cityscape from the comfort of your own home!”.

As for whether Laila will do other DIY changes to her home, it’s a ‘maybe’.

‘The building I moved into is a brand new one so I don’t really have any more makeovers in mind,’ she adds.
