Sonic the Hedgehog was THE cult video game of the 90s; now they’ve made a film about him starring Jim Carrey and you and the kids will LOVE it

He’s the cheeky, funny little fella with a penchant for speed and legs like lightening that the world fell in love with 30 years ago.

From this Friday – and all over half term – a new generation can fall under the spell of speedy Sonic the Hedgehog as the video game star makes his debut on the big screen.

Jim Carrey and James Marsden join the iconic blue ball of energy for an epic (mis)adventure that sees him race across the US, Egypt, China and even go into space.

Producer Neal Moritz, who also brought us The Fast And The Furious, says: ‘It’s a combination of what we love in movies – incredible action, comedy and a lot of heart that comes from Sonic’s friendship with the human characters.’

Anyone old enough to remember life before mobile phones will recall the instant furore Sonic caused when the original Sega game exploded onto the scene in 1991.

Suddenly all the rules had changed. Boring, personality-free characters were out and in their place was this speedy blue hedgehog with some serious attitude: pause too long and he’d glare at you and start tapping his foot in frustration.

And, boy, was he fast – flying across the screen, shooting high up into the air, leaping over obstacles with ease and avoiding any death trap in his way, all the time collecting the precious rings that kept him alive.

No wonder the world was obsessed. Now a new generation is set to fall for the blue blur (who wants us to point out he comes in a ‘very handsome package’) and the movie’s makers have stayed faithful to what made Sonic so special.

‘He has confidence, a sense of humour and a mischievous quality,’ says the film’s director Jeff Fowler.’

When we first meet Sonic, bad guys on his own planet are after his powers and he has to make use of a magical golden ring to make a narrow escape to Earth.

Making himself at home, he sets up a cosy mancave where he reads his favourite comic (‘The Flash’), watches movies (Speed, obviously) and exercises in the drum of a washing machine.

But he’s lonely, forced to stay hidden and watching the lives of others – particularly that of local sheriff Tom Wachowski AKA ‘Doughnut Lord’ (James Marsden) and his wife Maddie – from afar.

Then one night he accidentally shorts all the power in the area and his secret is out.

Evil Dr Robotnik (Jim Carrey) is called in by the US Government and becomes hellbent on tracking down the ‘intergalactic space rodent’ (aka the Blue Devil, aka the Space Hog) and harvesting his powers.

It’s a triumphant return to the big screen for comedy giant Carrey after two years away, starring on US TV show Kidding.

He had the time of his life as the ultimate baddie. ‘I had so much fun,’ he says. ‘I got to play with weird and wonderful gizmos in Robotnik’s lab and fly around in his spaceship, on a crane.’

But Robotnik hasn’t bargained for the friendship between Doughnut Lord and Sonic, who embark on a unique road trip (think bar brawl, line dancing and darts) to escape the moustachioed monster.

But will they be able to run rings around Robotnik and his evil drone army? You’ll have to watch it to find out….

Don't miss out!

Sonic The Hedgehog opens in cinemas nationwide on Friday, February 14
