Silent Hill 2 remake out in May suggests retail leak

After an age rating listing suggested the Silent Hill 2 remake is closer than expected a retailer seems to have nailed down an actual date.

So far, Konami’s resurrection of the Silent Hill franchise hasn’t gone very well. The recent free game The Short Message got a mediocre reception while live service game Ascension was so bad people thought it had been written by AI.

Although some are worried that developer Bloober Team aren’t up to the job, there’s still a lot of interest in the Silent Hill 2 remake, despite the fact that so little has been shown of it so far – despite the fact that it’s meant to be out this year.

Last week, the game turned up on the South Korean age rating website, which generally indicates a game is due to be released soon, and now a Mexican retailer has listed it for May 30.

The listing could be a placeholder but they’re usually the last day of the month or end up being on a day the game clearly won’t be released, like a Sunday. May 30 is a Thursday though, which could easily be the real release date.

That date seems to have been removed now, but it’s hard to say whether that makes it more or less likely that it was correct.

But while retailers can get the wrong end of the stick, or just list things earlier than they should to encourage pre-orders, the age rating listing alone is solid proof that the game is imminent.

The remake may be the highest profile Silent Hill game at the moment but it’s not the only one in development, with Townfall by British developer No Code already announced, alongside the promising looking Silent Hill ƒ.

There are rumours of more beyond even that but that probably depends upon Konami having a major hit with one of these first. That’s far from guaranteed, as Silent Hill has previously only ever been a cult hit and even the much lauded Silent Hill 2 only ever sold around 1 million copies, when it was originally released on PlayStation 2.

That makes it hard to guess how well the remake will do but it seems unlikely it’s going to be anywhere near as big as the Resident Evil remakes.
