More rumours about the next mainline Ghost Recon have emerged, stating that it’s much more realistic than other recent entries.
The existence of a new Ghost Recon has been reported since 2022 but Ubisoft has yet to officially announce any new instalment.
As far as most fans are concerned, the series has been on a downwards trajectory since 2019’s Ghost Recon Breakpoint, which was a financial and critical flop. Then, in 2022, Ubisoft had to cancel free-to-play spin-off Ghost Recon Frontline, following fan backlash.
Ghost Recon was only going to stay away for so long though, and now it seems Ubisoft is looking to revive it by going back to the series’ roots.
Previous rumours claimed the next Ghost Recon, codenamed Project Over, was set during the fictional Naiman War, and is scheduled to be released in 2025 or 2026, and now further details have emerged to reinforce that.
A new report calls Project Over a squad-based first person tactical shooter and also describes it as having ‘milsim’ (military simulator) elements, which implies it will be somewhat realistic in nature.
The game’s story will apparently revolve around your Ghost squad infiltrating a warzone ‘to carry out secret missions and to locate a traitor’ during the fictional conflict.
According to the report, website Insider Gaming has been seen footage of the game, which ‘appears to take heavy inspiration from the Modern Warfare series’.
This apparently includes ‘dark or controversial missions’. One example cited is your squad nearly shooting a man holding a baby, because they thought it was a bomb, only to realise their mistake at the last second.
If these reports are true, it sounds like it might be a back-to-basics approach with more tailored missions, after 2017’s Ghost Recon Wildlands shifted the series into an open world environment for the first time.
Along with a new Ghost Recon, Ubisoft is also believed to be working on two new Far Cry games, but neither have been announced. The company, however, has confirmed it is working on a Splinter Cell remake and various Assassin’s Creed games.
