Travelling can be one of the greatest pleasures in life, an escape from the 9-5 or a chance to explore our beautiful world beyond trips to Europe.

But what about if you don’t love the heat?

Despite what Instagram would have you believe, there are plenty of ways to travel the planet without having to choose between enduring blistering heat or risking turning into an icicle.

Here are our top picks for globetrotting destinations with more bearable average temperatures.

Medellin, Colombia

Average temperature: 18°C

Located in a narrow valley, Medellin is a bustling vibrant city in Colombia set against a backdrop of jagged peaks – and this natural beauty makes it the perfect setting for hiking, zip lining and horseback riding.

Nicknamed the City of Eternal Spring due to its pleasant climate, you can explore beautiful parks, and botanical gardens or experience the Aburrá Valley’s great cuisine.

Trujillo, Peru

Average temperature: 17°C

You’d be forgiven for thinking you’d travelled back in time with a visit to Trujillo, with its Colonial-era churches and streets. Just a short trip out of the city will see you discovering sites that date back further than the Incas.

If you visit in January you might also catch the Northern Marinera Festival, which is a spectacular week-long celebration of Peru’s national dance.

George, South Africa

Average temperature: 18°C

One of the oldest towns in South Africa, George is nestled in the Cape Wildflower Floral Kingdom, so you’re sure to see some scenic landscape.

The area is full of farms and markets where you can buy things such as cheese, fruit and meat. And if adventure is more your thing, you can take in a hiking trail or canoe down the Kaaimans River.

Serengeti, Tanzania

Average temperature: 18°C

One for nature lovers, the Serengeti National Park is home to a variety of wild animals, from the wildebeest’s famed Great Migration to gazelles, cheetahs and lions.

Obviously, the area can get very popular, so to experience the true Serengeti (with fewer tourists) it’s recommended to go between August and October.

Mexico City, Mexico

Average temperature: 16°C

For a truly magical cultural trip, look no further than Mexico City: full flavoured (and we don’t just mean the delicious food), steeped in history and surrounded by art.

Packed full of markets and museums, it can be overwhelming to decide what to do, but the Mexican capital’s must-sees include the beautiful home of Frida Kahlo, a wealth of expansive libraries and the picturesque canals of Xochimilco.

Where to book your European summer holiday to avoid heatwaves...

Here’s where to book a European summer holiday to avoid the heatwaves

Sweden

Ah the fabulous Nordic country home to mountains, lakes, forests and, of course, ABBA.

Once a Viking stomping ground, the serene and affordable destination also happens to be somewhat sheltered from high temperatures.

Usual temperatures for summer sit at around 22 or 23°C, so even heatwave days won’t be too much more.

If you’re a fan of hiking and seafood then it could be the perfect summer holiday destination. Not to mention flights start from just £28.

That’s less than our weekly shop!

Denmark

If you equate summer holidays with beaches Denmark may not jump out at you as a suitable alternative to Greece or Spain, but, it has a surprising amount of coastline for you to indulge in.

Blokhus Beach is a great spot to visit on the Nordic coastline with gorgeous white sand and lovely dunes.

And while it’s not baking hot, it peaks at a very lovely 26°C during the summer months.

If you’re not fussed about beaches then why not indulge yourself in the coastal capital, Copenhagen.

Switzerland

Now, this isn’t a country for those looking for a cheap getaway. In fact, it’s one of the most expensive countries in the world.

However, the home of chocolate and dazzling watches does have a lot to offer.

From the Swiss National Park to stargazing and boating, there are countless activities to keep you entertained, if you’re willing to splash the cash.

The temperature is sitting at a comfortable 24°C in most areas and will possibly peak at around 29°C – although that heat won’t last.
