Respawn is apparently working on a first person shooter based on The Mandalorian series, which will have mobility mechanics akin to Apex Legends.
Developer Respawn only launched Star Wars Jedi: Survivor last year, but the studio has been working on several other Star Wars titles at the same time.
Back in 2022, it was reported that EA and Respawn were working on three new Star Wars titles – the sequel to Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, and two others which were described as a strategy game and a first person shooter project.
According to a new report, one of the projects in early development is connected to Disney+ series The Mandalorian and will see players control the bounty hunter as you capture targets dead or alive for rewards.
As reported by Insider Gaming, the game is described as being in first person and takes place when the Galactic Empire rules over the galaxy – which is odd as the show is set post-Return of the Jedi.
It’s claimed the game is ‘very fast-paced’ and will have linear levels across the Star Wars universe, where players will be rewarded for playing stylishly. As an example, the report suggests that your health will regenerate upon successive kills. It’s unclear, however, if the game will come with a multiplayer component.
The Mandalorian’s jetpack is, as you’d expect, said to be key mechanic in the mobility department, which allows players to perform ‘horizontal dashing, vertical jumping’ and ‘boost sliding’ akin to Apex Legends.
The report states that the game was originally being led by Mohammad Alavi, who left Respawn back in January 2022. A report about his departure at the time, by VentureBeat’s Jeff Grubb, described the unnamed game he was working on as being focused on ‘mobility’ and ‘style’.
That’s not contradicted by the initial first person details from the same month, which suggested the game is being overseen by Respawn game director Peter Hirschmann; he was previously executive producer for the original Battlefront series, back when he used to work at LucasArts – so he should know his onions when it comes to Star Wars, if not first person shooters.
‘Working with Lucasfilm Games on a new FPS in the Star Wars galaxy is a dream come true for me, as this is a story I have always wanted to tell’, said Hirschmann in 2022, also implying the game is narrative based rather than multiplayer focused.
According to Henderson, the Mandalorian shooter will be ‘still a year or two away, at the very least’, which means it probably won’t be officially announced this year.
This wouldn’t be the first time we’ve had a Star Wars game pitched around a bounty hunter though. Back in 2002, LucasArts developed Star Wars: Bounty Hunter for the PlayStation 2 and Nintendo GameCube, where you controlled Jango Fett from a third person perspective.
A Mandalorian game, however, makes sense considering the show is one of the best received Star Wars projects in recent years, with a movie on the way too. Just try to forget about the third season.
