Miranda Kerr welcomed her fourth child last weekend, opting for a French name for her new arrival.

The 40-year-old settled on the name Pierre for her newborn son – a moniker that means ‘rock’ or ‘stone’ in French.

While French baby names have been a popular choice with UK parents for decades, even centuries (just look at the likes of Charlotte and Louis), a new variety is rising up the ranks, explains Nameberry’s editor Sophie Kihm.

She tells Metro: ‘French names are among the most classic choices in the English-speaking world. British royal names including Charles, Louis, Charlotte, and Anne all have French origins, and are all traditional choices in the UK and US.

‘Lately, a fresher crop of French names is attracting attention among today’s parents. Choices like Elodie and Margot are rising for girls, Remy and Lucien for boys.

‘Celebrities are also getting in on the trend. Miranda Kerr of course chose the classic French Pierre for her baby boy, and it was recently revealed that Sophie Turner and Joe Jonas’s youngest daughter is named Delphine.

‘The celebrity endorsements may encourage parents to dust off these forgotten French gems for their own children.’

And there are numerous reasons parents-to-be might pick a French name for their new arrival – perhaps, most obviously, its chic appeal.

Sophie Bell, from Babycentre, tells Metro: ‘France is certainly known for being fashionable, so if parents are looking for a chic and stylish name they should look no further than names with French origins.

‘We think French names could grow in popularity this year as all eyes will be on Paris this summer for the Olympics.

‘And it’s not just sporting fans who may be inspired in 2024. As excitement grows for the next series of the hit Netflix show Emily in Paris, parents could be saying enchanté to a French-inspired moniker.’
