Chantelle Houghton won Celebrity Big Brother in 2006 and is still a loyal viewer, but she strongly believes that the ITV reboot needs to make some changes.
The Big Brother alumni member watched the summer series intently. Now, she’s got a few notes ahead of the broadcaster’s first celebrity version which begins on March 4, and is expected to include former This Morning host Fern Britton and X Factor legend Louis Walsh.
Firstly, the 40-year-old wants to see more of her fellow Big Brother graduates appearing on the spin-off show, Big Brother: Late and Live.
Main show hosts AJ Odudu and Will Best took turns to present the extra programme and welcomed celebrity guests into their studio to share opinions on housemates. These included Rizzle Kick’s musician Jordan Stephens, Ru Paul’s Drag Race winner The Vivienne, and Strictly Come Dancing legend Oti Mabuse. However, there weren’t many celebrities who’d experienced living inside the famous house which didn’t go unnoticed by Chantelle.
Chantelle, who was left ‘bald’ after winning the show, insisted that her thoughts have nothing to do with her desire to be booked.
‘I’m saying that as a viewer, not just because I didn’t get the opportunity to go on it. As a viewer, I like to see the ex-housemates and see what their opinion is of different things that have gone on in the house.
‘I really struggled to watch the after-show, because of the people they had on the panel, I hadn’t really heard of them.’ Do the guests want some ice for that burn?
‘I want to know from somebody who gets it,’ she stated.
Chantelle wasn’t finished either, she also wants a major change to the eviction shows. Currently, the chat with the latest evictee happens directly after the main show on Late and Live. That’s not cutting it for Chantelle.
‘My other criticism would be when someone gets evicted, I want to see their interview straight after, I don’t want to see another eviction straight away, because it just feels like you’re in a rush,’ she explained.
‘It was too rushed, because I want to hear what they’ve got to say. I don’t want to see someone else get whacked out, and evicted afterwards straightaway.
‘I think they’re my only two criticisms, but they’re very important ones,’ she concluded. Chantelle has spoken.
Despite Big Brother’s flaws, she still gets goosebumps when she hears the theme tune.
‘I was on that sofa five to nine waiting for it to start and I absolutely loved it,’ she said of the 2023 series.
‘I was completely and utterly obsessed with it. I absolutely adore Henry [Southan] and Jordan [Sangha], and we’ve spoken on Instagram through messages.
‘Their relationship feels similar to mine and Preston’s relationship. It is just so natural and lovely.’
Chantelle’s time in the house will forever go down in the Big Brother history books, as she is the only non-celebrity to win the celebrity version.
To stay in the house, she was given a secret task to convince her housemates, including Jodie Marsh and the late Pete Burns, that she was famous. This included performing her fake single I Want It All, which she allegedly released with her girl band Kandy Floss.
Once she successfully passed, Chantelle could relax and grew close to Ordinary Boys’ singer Preston, 42.
The pair wed months after the final, but their marriage lasted less than a year. Although, they have managed to maintain a friendship.
After seven years off-air, ITV confirmed in November that the celebrity spin-off will be returning on its flagship channel ITV1. The relaunch follows the successful revival of the original show, Big Brother, which gained its biggest viewing figures in more than a decade.
Chantelle was speaking on behalf of Spin Genie.
