Amid rumours (and denials) of a surprise Gavin and Stacey revival, show star Mathew Horne has found a side hustle doing impressions of the show’s characters.

The English actor, 45, starred as the titular Gavin in the legendary BBC sitcom that also starred James Corden, Ruth Jones, Rob Brydon, and Joanna Page.

In recent weeks there were strong rumours that the Barry Island series would be coming back for one more Christmas special, only for Ruth to quickly dismiss them.

While waiting to hear about the future of the show, Matthew, who most recently starred in an episode of Inside No.9, has been focusing on his side hustle: celebrity video-sharing website Cameo.

Cameo is a website where celebrities sign up and can be contacted by members of the public to make dedicated and specialised videos, usually for a price set by themselves.

Matthew is currently charging £87 for personal videos and £4 for a quick message – although the £4 price for messages comes with the warning that Matthew might not respond.

In one video, Horne mimicked James Corden’s character Smithy, who used to call his friend ‘Gavlar’ in the series. He also referred to a couple getting married as ‘sl*gs’, referencing another joke from the BBC comedy.

Many other celebrities have opened up Cameo accounts, including Ricky Tomlinson from The Royle Family, Bill Roache from Coronation Street, Emily Carey from House of the Dragon, and top earner – Inbetweeners actor James Buckley.

As for Matthew, it seemed we’d be seeing him on our screens again before long, with rumours of a Gavin and Stacey Christmas 2024 reunion getting stronger by the minute earlier this month.

First, it was reported that the show would be returning for a Christmas special later this year, with filming set to take place over the summer and with the cast reunited once again.

The last episode of Gavin and Stacey aired back in 2019 when a special festive episode saw Ruth’s character Nessa propose to Smithy. It ended on a cliffhanger that many fans hoped would be resolved.

But five years later, it seems fans are going to have to wait even longer, with Ruth pouring water on the rumours of a return before they got out of hand.

Speaking on to RTE 1 radio, she stated that the news was ‘sadly a rumour’ and that ‘if there was something to say on that front, James and I would happily announce it’.

However, fellow cast member and show star Rob Brydon ignited the fires again, telling BBC Radio 4: ‘I sound like a politician, as far as I’m aware it’s another rumour. I don’t know. I mean, I’d love it if it were true.’
