Couple transform dingy garage into dream home worth £500,000

A couple has proved that sometimes you have to get creative in order to obtain your dream home.

Lexi Flannagan, 26, and her partner, Sam, 31, became inspired to create something wonderful after spotting a former double garage for £172,500 on Zoopla in August 2016.

The garage, which had been converted into a tiny house, was listed online for just 30 minutes before they called to book a viewing. The pair quickly realised it would be the perfect ‘project’ for them as they could transform the space and add value to it in the process.

‘We wanted something that was run down and needed a lot of work to add value to the build,’ Lexi, a stay at home mum from Cheltenham, Gloucestershire, explained.

“One of the major draws of the garage was its location and I was very pleased with it. It’s not far from neighbouring towns like Tewksbury and Cheltenham and also a two minute drive from the motorway.’

The couple moved in and lived in the property as it was, while they were waiting for planning permission to be granted.

But while the permission process was lengthy, Lexi and Sam remained undaunted by the task that lay ahead.

‘The planning permission wasn’t my biggest worry — however, it did cross my mind a couple of times but we didn’t have one issue with it,’ Lexi explained.

Once they finally got the green light they set to work turning the garage into a three-bedroom two-storey home, with renovations costing £100,000 in total.

They started the building project in February 2017, and moved out while work was carried out on the roof.

The first major change they made to the garage was an extension outwards to create the space for an open-plan ground floor and to create more space for the bedrooms upstairs.

Then, on the ground floor, the couple created an open-plan kitchen alongside the living room.

This was followed by work on the first floor, wherein they added three bedrooms with a hallway and a new bathroom.

With all the new space, friends and neighbours were stunned at the transformation, which was completed in January 2019.

And rightly so, as the couple have more than doubled the value of the place, as it’s now worth a whopping £500,000.

‘Anyone that came over to the house was very shocked at how big it was on the inside, as it looked like an average house,’ she said.

The couple, and their son Levi, now live back in their original family home 10 minutes away, and rent out the former garage in Coombe Hill.

They add that as they have two homes, they plan to set one aside for two-year-old Levi when he grows up. How lovely!
