Glastonbury’s legends slot – on the Sunday afternoon – is perhaps the most-anticipated of them all.
While this year saw Blondie getting the crowd going and then Yusuf Islam (Cat Stevens) rocking out steadily to Wild World as thousands swayed in unison, 2024 predictions are already whirring as tickets sold out in a heartbeat back in November.
This is a happy time to be alive for those lucky 200,000 people who are going to don their wellies – or walking boots, we’ve heard these are better for stomping purposes – and head to Worthy Farm on the last weekend in June.
Now, one icon who has never before played at Glastonbury is very up for filling the legends slot – born after Tony Bennett’s 1998 breezy Sunday afternoon performance filled the fields with love.
If you believe in life after love, I got you babe… Because Cher has officially said she will very much say yes if asked to Glastonbury 2024. Eek! Someone phone up Emily Eavis immediately.
Chatting to Rylan on Radio 2 and BBC Sound today, the Believe singer, 77, said yes, yes, and yes again.
‘There are so many rumours, you haven’t done it yet, Glastonbury. Are we ever going to see Cher take on that legends slot at Glastonbury?’ Rylan asked tentatively.
‘I’d like to!’ she responded, to which the presenter gasped: ‘Really?!’
‘Yes!’ she confirmed once more.
‘So hang on, you’re saying if I manage to make this happen you’ll be on that stage?’ pressed Rylan, as Cher replied again with a firm: ‘Yes!’.
‘Right, Cher shake my hand. I’m going to go down to Worthy Farm myself. I don’t care what I’ve got to crawl through, believe me there’s a lot on that farm, I’m going to get you that legends slot,’ said the broadcaster, speaking everyone’s mind.
Now that, folks, would be a legends slot to remember.
2023 saw the only time there’s ever been a double legends slot, taken half by the Father and Son singer, and the other by the Call Me rocker, who like Cher would be, was 77 when she performed.
Past legends who have played the slot include Kylie Minogue, Lionel Richie, Dolly Parton, Paul Simon, Tom Jones, Johnny Cash, Led Zeppelin, Van Morrison, and James Brown.
Other Glastonbury 2024 headliner rumours include Bruce Springsteen, Madonna, Beyoncé, and Harry Styles.
Eek. Only half a year to wait…
