More rumours about Insomniac’s Wolverine game suggest it’s not out next year after all, but that it may have a cyberpunk style angle.
After announcing The Last Of Us Part 2 Remastered in the most low-key possible at the weekend, that may be the official reveal from Sony this year, unless they have something planned for The Game Awards on December 8.
If they do deign to attend that event then the most likely thing they’ll talk about is Wolverine, which is the only single-player game they still have on their schedules, but which does not yet have a release date – although the latest rumour claims it’s not out until 2025.
Previous rumours, including a leak via an artist involved with the game, suggested that the game is aiming for a 2024 launch, which may well have been true at some point but apparently is no longer possible.
The rumour comes via movie tipster, and Marvel expert, DanielRPK, who is well respected in his field but has only recently begun to dabble in video games.
You can only see the information directly if you join his Patreon, but according to his sources the game is set for a 2025 release and will have a ‘darker, violent tone’ – presumably in comparison with Spider-Man.
He also alleges that the game will feature Madripoor, which is something that’s been rumoured before. Although it’s made a brief appearance in the MCU, in The Falcon And The Winter Soldier show, it’s been a mainstay of the comics for years and is used as a rough analogue for Singapore.
Although it does vary, and it wasn’t really the case for the MCU, Madripoor is often depicted as very technologically advanced, with an almost cyberpunk vibe, and that may explain the artist rumour implying the game features ‘sci-fi and apocalypse’ imagery.
Exactly how accurate that description is remains to be seen but a second look at the teaser trailer from last year suggests that Wolverine may in fact be in Madripoor already, as the bar he’s at appears to be called the Princess Bar – which is the same location featured in The Falcon And The Winter Soldier.
