The competition has been heating up in the MasterChef kitchen as the final four contestants have reached the grand finale.

Judges John Torode and Gregg Wallace were back with their taste buds in tow to pick out the most promising from a group of nine aspiring amateur chefs.

Fans were ‘gutted’ on Friday night as contestant Jack Wilkinson narrowly missed the final, which means Terri, Chariya, Anurag and Omar are the 2023 finalists and will face each other once more in a bid to become this year’s MasterChef champion.

Following the reveal that they were finalists, the top four shared their experiences of being on the show and their joy of being in the final ahead of their last challenge.

Anurag, a 41-year-old accountant said: ‘I decided to enter MasterChef to express my passion for food and to learn from others. For me food is more than just ingredients, recipes or dishes, it’s an expression of who I am and demonstrates my creativity.’

He added: ‘I’m absolutely delighted to make it through to the Finals! I see MasterChef as the perfect platform to express my love for cooking and what could be better than getting the opportunity to cook for the British Consul General in Turkey?!’

Master coffee roaster Chariya, 40, wanted to showcase her passion for Thai cuisine, which has secured her a place in the finale.

‘I’m absolutely delighted to reach The Finals, especially given the incredibly high standard of the other cooks, but I’ve been determined to stay focused and do my best.’

Toy developer Omar, 31, expressed that he dreamt of applying for the hit BBC show, and now he’s made it to the final four!

‘Going on MasterChef is all about the experience, the pressure, and the opportunity to learn from some absolute industry pioneers and it has delivered on every one of those beyond my wildest dreams. I have never felt nerves like I do when cooking for John and Gregg,’ he said.

Meanwhile, assistant account manager Terri, 30, compared the final four feeling to an out of body experience.

‘Cooking for John and Gregg is terrifying but amazing all at the same time,’ she said.

‘They have the best job in the world! They are really supportive, funny and, most of all, honest. In the kitchen I’m a perfectionist, so I was probably harder on myself than the judges ever were.

The winner is always awarded the coveted MasterChef trophy.

But it is the recognition, prestige and exposure that is the main appeal of winning the contest.

‘Being a fan of the show, I remember all of the finalists through the years and to think that I have joined that list of amazing cooks is unreal.’

In the past finalists have gone to open their own restaurants or have launched a culinary career.

MasterChef airs tonight at 8pm on BBC One
