Two years after the initial announcement, it seems a pair of promised Tomb Raider Switch ports will finally launch in the coming months.
Everyone is still waiting for Crystal Dynamics to unveil the next mainline Tomb Raider game. The project was announced in 2021 for the franchise’s 25th anniversary but very little about it has been explained beyond it unifying the timelines of the original games and the modern reboot.
There is the Tomb Raider Reloaded mobile spin-off that resurfaced this past February, but that seemed dead in the water before it even began.
Fortunately, those hankering for a traditional console experience will be pleased to know that the Nintendo Switch is getting some long overdue ports in the near future.
A rating for something titled The Lara Croft Collection was recently spotted on the ESRB’s website and while it doesn’t specify which games are included, it’s pretty obvious what they are from the description.
‘This is a collection of two action adventure games in which players help Lara Croft and her allies search for artifacts to stop ancient gods from destroying the world,’ it reads.
‘From a 3/4 overhead perspective, players traverse jungle ruins and ancient temples, solve puzzles, and battle hordes of enemy creatures.’
That means the collection must consist of 2010’s Lara Croft And The Guardian Of Light and its 2014 sequel Lara Croft And The Temple Of Osiris.
These ports were actually announced back in 2021 and were said to be launching in 2022. Square Enix opting to sell the Tomb Raider franchise along with Crystal Dynamics seemingly scuppered its launch but, while there’s no official word, it seems new publisher Embracer Group is ready to push forward with those plans.
The ESRB listing also seems to confirm that Crystal Dynamics, which developed the original games, isn’t behind the Switch ports. Instead, they’re being worked on by British studio Feral Interactive, which usually handles porting games to other platforms.
Previous examples include the Mac and Linux ports of previous Tomb Raider games and the Switch port of Alien Isolation – which was noted for being especially good (maybe Activision should get them working on Call Of Duty).
There’s no mention of a release date but the rating’s existence means an announcement is likely just around the corner. At the very least, the collection will probably drop before the end of the year.
