Matthew McConaughey has spoken about a worrying moment during a flight, when the plane unexpectedly dropped 4,000 feet.

The Interstellar actor, 53, was on board a Lufthansa flight with his wife, Camila Alves, 41, traveling from Austin to Frankfurt on March 1, before it was diverted to Washington due to severe turbulence.

Several were taken to hospital after the incident, with Camila sharing scary footage on social media.

In a snippet of SiriusXM’s Let’s Talk Off Camera podcast with Kelly Ripa, obtained by Entertainment Tonight, the Oscar-winner reflected on the ‘hell of a scare’, revealing that he didn’t have his seatbelt on at that moment.

‘It’s suspended disbelief. I mean, it’s zero gravity,’ he said, via the outlet. ‘Your red wine and the glass and the plates that your food was on are all suspended, floating, still just in the air. And to look at it for that long, which wasn’t that long – one, two, three, four [seconds] – and then everything just comes crashing down.

‘My tray table is what held me down. I did not have my seatbelt on, and there was not a seatbelt warning right before it happened.’

He explained that he ‘reached over’ to make sure that Camila was safe and had her seatbelt on, and was luckily sat beside a pilot friend.

‘As a person who’s not a pilot, my mind goes to the actual engineering of the plane. The steel, it buckled. And you go, “How can something withstand that?'” he continued.

‘I happened to have a friend of mine sitting next to me who was a pilot. And he was calm as could be. I was like, “Can the plane hold that?” And he was like, “These things are so tested, that yes, don’t worry, the plane structurally can hold that.” That was a big relief.

‘I was like, “If something’s wrong, can you fly this thing?” And he was like, “No problem.” And I was like, “Great, love to hear that.”’

Camila revealed the chaotic scenes on Instagram last month, sharing their scary experience with fans.

She also made sure to thank those who were able to keep them safe – and the staff who served the couple in the bar of their hotel in Washington after the diversion.

‘On Flight last night, I was told plane dropped almost 4000 feet, 7 people went to the hospital,’ she said at the time.

‘Everything was flying everywhere. To respect the privacy of those around me that’s all I am showing but the plane was a CHAOS And the turbulence keep on coming.

‘The @lufthansa flight you are seeing on the news today!!!! Yes…that one. Thank God everyone was safe and ok. I must say everyone @marriottbonvoy by the airport of Washington where we had to divert to and spend the night was so kind!

‘@officiallymcconaughey and I made it to the bar with 1 minute before closing…slept well, getting on new flight today, To the journey I continue… Karin Lacy was a savior with me until 1am working on new flights!!! [sic].’

Alongside a subsequent post from her hotel room in Germany, Camila later added: ‘It’s been “turbulent days”. After 2 full days of travel caused by the flight severe turbulence delays, I finally arrived at my destination, with gratitude.

‘Thinking of everyone that was on that flight, specially the 7 passengers that went to the hospital and the whole crew who got us to land safely! The day here was back to back, I will share all tomorrow. It’s midnight and just having my first meal of the day as there was no break before. And as I sit here I pray in gratitude [sic].’
