Dynamic mum and daughter duo Chrys and Mikaela Phillips have been compared to a modern-day Lorelei and Rory Gilmore because of their incredibly close relationship.
With Mother’s Day coming up in the UK, it’s a time to celebrate family bonds, and mother and daughter Chrys and Mikaela Phillips’ is unbreakable.
The pair, who have frequently been compared to the Gilmore Girls, moved to Los Angeles from Australia to pursue their dreams of taking Hollywood by storm. Now, they’re back in Australia and are enjoying life on the Gold Coast.
‘We have been back in Australia for almost a year now,’ Mikaela, 25, tells Metro.co.uk, ‘but time has just flown by.’
Mikaela says that she and her mum moved back home to Australia due to the pandemic.
‘At the time Covid first struck, we were still working and living in LA. The entertainment industry began to shut down and it was clear at that stage in time that we had to figure out other means of financial support,’ she says.
‘When the opportunity presented itself to return to Australia where filming was still allowed and progressing on big productions, we knew we had to make the tough decision to leave America and take advantage of the work back home.’
Mikaela and her mum have worked together on a variety of productions, the most recent being their new feature film, ‘Madison and the Happiness Jar’, which is currently in negotiation with distributors.
While in Australia, the duo have been able to continue working restriction-free. Madison and the Happiness Jar is a feel-good, young adult drama film and Mikaela says that it is ‘exactly what the world needs right now.’
‘Life in Australia during the pandemic has truly been a blessing,’ says Mikaela. ‘It is one of the only places that’s handled the situation so well and has been fortunate enough to have no, or very limited, restrictions.’
A typical workday for Mikaela lasts 10-15 hours filming on location and, although the country is currently virus-free, Australia still has the appropriate measures in place.
‘When filming, we still took measures to be Covid-safe,’ Mikaela explains. ‘Restrictions included temperature checking every single person every day and keeping a record that had to be signed off on. Hand sanitizers are regularly around and available and masks available for all to use.’
Mikaela says that while the mother and daughter’s success as a team makes them more formidable and dynamic, both holding their own as strong female contenders in the entertainment industry, with their own wins and achievements. Chrys has recently signed on to direct her second feature film while Mikaela has booked a new acting role.
The mother and daughter team are regularly compared to Lorelei and Rory Gilmore, the leading ladies in noughties cult classic sitcom, Gilmore Girls.
‘We do get the Gilmore Girls comparison quite a lot,” explains Mikaela. “I think that, honestly, the main reason is because no one had ever really seen that type of mother-daughter relationship before until that show came out.”
Mikaela notes that the unique and desirable quirks seen in Lorelai and Rory can be seen in herself and Chrys.
‘It’s that unique relationship that balances it’s barriers of a parent and child but also is never too far serious and has that fun-loving, quirky energy of friendship, likeliness,’ she continues.
Finally, Mikaela says that her and her mum are ‘each other’s rocks’ and their bond is as strong as ever.
‘Our relationship is unique, fun and well-grounded,’ she says. ‘We have a strong and close bond built on mutual respect, a ton of laughter and a good understanding of each other. She’s always had my back no matter what.’
