Forget the notion that healthy juices are just for summer.
Lola Biggs, nutritionist and dietician for Together Health, says that adding fresh, raw plants into your day is always a good idea, no matter what the season – and is particularly important during winter to give your body an extra boost.
Here, Lola shares three favourite recipes for healthy juices. Simply pop all the ingredients into a juicer and let the goodness cleanse you from the inside.
Detox Juice recipe
‘The body is incredible at removing things that are not good for it, and juicing particular fruits, herbs and vegetables can support this process,’ says Lola.
‘The main organ involved in detox is the liver and foods like leafy green vegetables, and sour fruits like lemons, papaya and pineapple can help. The inclusion of ginger or turmeric – also great for liver cleansing and detoxification – adds some zing. If you’re feeling sluggish, this is a great one for purification.’
Ingredients:
- 3-5 stalks of celery.
- This helps reduce fat build-up in the liver and helps it produce the enzymes that flush toxins out
- 1/2 cucumber.
- An excellent source of B vitamins, it can help boost immunity and is great for the skin
- 1/2 lemon.
- Effective at cleansing and helping with gastric problems
- 3 slices of pineapple.
- A bromelain-rich fruit that aids good digestion
- Thumb-size piece of ginger/turmeric root.
- An antioxidant with anti-inflammatory benefits, it eases indigestion and is an effective germ-fighter
Energy Booster Juice
‘One way we can maintain healthy energy levels is by reducing the impact of the things that drain us,’ says Lola.
‘The main energy zappers are those that cause oxidation in the body, overwork our adrenal glands and cause spikes in our blood sugars. The ability of our body to capture energy and nourishment from our food relies on a healthy gut.
‘Helpful live cultures in fermented foods and drinks colonise our guts and can enhance our ability to grab B vitamins from the foods we eat.’
Ingredients:
- 3-5 stalks of celery.
- Flavanol-rich to reduce inflammation
- 1 grapefruit (including the pulp and skin).
- Has high levels of pectin that sticks to toxins in the blood and flushes them out of the body
- 1-2 beetroot.
- A great source of folic acid, fibre, potassium and good blood circulation booster
- 2 carrots.
- Excellent source of beta carotene and vitamin A. These can reduce the fat in the liver, while the fibre can help clean out the colon
- Thumb size piece of ginger.
- An antioxidant with anti-inflammatory benefits
- ½ tsp of Chaga mushroom.
- A nutrient-dense superfood, packed with over ten vitamins, minerals and nutrients that help support the immune system and fight off germs
- 500mg of extracted ashwagandha.
- Helps increase energy
- 100mg of CoQ10
- A compound that helps generate good energy in your cells
- 1 tbsp of kefir/kombucha or sauerkraut/kimchi juice.
- Contains antioxidants that can help fight free radicals and to improve the digestive system
Hangover Juice
‘After a heavy night, it’s important to put the right nutrients back into your body,’ says Lola.
‘The right kind of ingredients can help cure a hangover and hydrate your body and cells. You can prepare this in advance and store in an airtight bottle in the fridge so it’s ready for when you need it.’
Ingredients:
- 1 cup of organic coconut water.
- Contains antioxidants that can help protect cells from damage caused by free radicals, and a fast, easy way to improve your electrolyte balance after drinking
- 2 slices of watermelon.
- Full of lycopene and Vitamin C
- 4 sprigs of fresh mint.
- Helps with nausea
- Half a large cucumber.
- Cooling and soothing on digestion
- 3 handfuls of spinach.
- A great source of magnesium, which booze consumption tends to deplete
- 1 tbsp aloe vera juice.
- Increases water-soluble vitamin absorption and reduces inflammation
- 2 slices of pineapple.
- Enzymes and bromelain improves a sickly tummy
- 1 lemon.
- Juiced whole to capture bioflavonoids in pulp and skin
