PrettyLittleThing criticised for selling clothes for 35p and lower on Black Friday

Reaction to PrettyLittleThing’s Black Friday has been mixed.

As the Black Friday sales rumble on, some mark-downs are more dramatic than others.

PrettyLittleThing’s Pink Friday sale came under fire today for slashing their prices by up to 99%.

Dresses, tops and even denim jackets have all been reduced to staggering prices under £1.

Just this summer, fast fashion brand Boohoo (now the owner of PLT) faced intense criticism for allegedly paying employees as little as £3.50 an hour and claims they forced staff to continue working in shoddy conditions, even after some tested positive for coronavirus.

The irony of the sale wasn’t lost on some Twitter users, who have been tweeting their disapproval all day:

This year, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) worked out that the fashion industry produces 10% of global carbon dioxide emissions every year and uses around 1.5 trillion litres of water annually.

But fast fashion brands are more likely to be size-inclusive than ethical clothing companies. It’s not possible for everyone to only choose sustainable, ethically made clothing.

‘Eco conscious clothing doesn’t come in size fat,’ Gina Tonic wrote for Refinery29. ‘If thin bloggers are boycotting fast fashion brands to promote fashion sustainability, they should also boycott brands that refuse to supply a full size range to their customers, too.’

In response to the backlash, a spokesperson for PrettyLittleThing told Metro.co.uk: As part of our Black Friday campaign, we are offering customers in the UK 99% off selected lines while stock lasts.

‘After a bleak 2020 for most of us, we wanted to offer something competitive and understand people may be spending less in what is usually peak shopping season.’

The sale has created an undeniable amount of hype, too, as many Twitter users were just grateful for the bargains:

And some were maybe a little *too* optimistic about how far the sale would go:

But despite criticism, the rate at which PLT’s 35p dresses have been selling out proves how much of a success it really was:
