Influencers might be going mad for pampas grass Christmas trees this year, but for many of us, nothing is quite as good as the real thing.
In fact, in the UK we buy as many as 8 million real Christmas trees every winter. But come January, the majority of these sorry specimens will be lining the pavements, looking a bit worse for wear and destined to be unceremoniously dumped in landfill.
Not only is this a huge waste of money, but it also carries a staggering carbon footprint; a two-metre tall tree that ends up in landfill produces 16kg of CO2, according to the Carbon Trust.
Fortunately, there is another option for eco-conscious tree lovers. Some Christmas tree companies have started offering trees on a rental basis.
How it works
Instead of buying a cut tree, you take home a potted specimen for the Christmas period, making sure to take care of it properly by watering it daily and keeping it away from heat sources.
After Christmas, the tree is then collected, replanted and left to grow until next year. As long as the tree is looked after properly, you’ll also get some of your money back.
The benefits
Not only is this a much more sustainable option than cutting down a healthy tree, but your festive friend will be in top condition throughout their stay with you over the holidays.
That means a lovely fresh pine smell all Christmas, and no more hoovering up those annoying little needles until April next year.
It also tends to be a little cheaper than buying a cut tree.
Where to rent your tree
Rental Claus is a scheme by Cheltenham-based company Cotswald Fir that has been offering rental trees since 2012. They specialise in pot-grown Norway spruces, many of which are rented by the same family every year. You can pick up a tree from one of their shops, or they deliver to Gloucester, Cheltenham, Stroud and central Bristol.
Love a Christmas Tree grows a whopping 15,000 Christmas trees, which are available to rent and can be delivered to Leicestershire, Warwickshire and South Nottingham.
London Christmas Tree Rental offers pot-grown trees around the capital. Their stock is just about sold out for the year, but their website says to get in touch with your requirements as they do get cancellations.
Alternatively, if you have a spacious garden there are plenty of companies who offer pot-grown trees to take home for life. As long as they’re looked after properly, you should be able to dig them up and replant them once a year, making them both cheap and sustainable.
Check out Christmas Trees Delivered, who offer pot-grown Colorado Blue spruces, Fraser firs, Nordmann firs and Norway spruces.
