Looking for a creative but cheap way to spruce up your home and give it that cosy winter feel?
A woman named Carrie Rose has come up with a crafty solution – and the DIY project took just five days and cost her £50.
The 27-year-old from Sheffield wanted a unique feature that would add invaluable character to her home – a fireplace – but, living in a new-build property, there was nothing to work with.
So Carrie simply decided to simply create one herself.
‘It took me around five days to do this project,’ Carrie, who is the founder and creative director of her own company, Rise at Seven, tells Metro.co.uk.
‘It’s quite a fast turnaround, but I ordered everything in ready for me to just go for it.
‘I’m the type to start a project and never finish it when it comes to home DIY and this one I really wanted ready for winter.
‘Most of the time, I was waiting for paint to dry but it was fairly easy to put together and I didn’t need any fancy tools (or men).
‘The inspiration was actually from The White Company. I went into their store and saw they had redone their shop, making it Christmas-themed.
‘In there was a fireplace just like this. I asked the lady whether this was a White Company product, but she said it was just store decor.
‘So I took a picture and went off to create it myself.’
Carrie sourced the fire surround from Facebook, for free – and spent minimal amount of money on the white paint and logs, which were purchased from B&Q and eBay.
She says: ‘For the fire surrounding, I used a Facebook for sale page (Doncaster – a woman who owned a farm house had it in her garage and said I could have it for free.
‘I put a post out saying I was looking for something similar to this and got a few messages.
‘You’ll be surprised how many people just have fire surround mantles laying around.
‘The white paint, wood board for the back and black chalk paint and wood glue to stick the logs on was from B&Q (around £20 all in all) and the logs were from eBay (£30).’
Carrie is thrilled with the look of her new fireplace, and has received a lot of positive feedback from guests and online, sharing snaps of her masterpiece on Facebook.
She says: ‘I love it. It’s my favourite feature in the house.
‘I live in a new-build home and the one thing about new-builds is that they never have character.
‘I love old character, wood and log burners, so adding this to a new-build made it so different to any other home on this estate.
‘I get a lot of compliments and comments from people who come to my house. Ive actually had around seven people ask me how to make it as they’re making one for their own house.
‘It looks perfect in autumn and winter – very Christmassy.
‘I don’t have any big DIY projects on the go at the minute – I did over summer, completely did my whole garden, making a seating area and fairly lights around it.
‘My next mini-project is a Halloween wreath.’
