Halloween is upon us.

If you’re a fan of the scary holiday, why not plan a day-trip to a creepy castle and learn all about its spooky history?

New research has revealed 25 of the most haunted castles in the UK and some of the chilling legends of their past.

The aptly named Chillingham Castle, Northumberland, has nabbed the top spot, with over 500 mentions on TripAdvisor of visitors noticing ghostly movements.

The fortress was originally a monastery back in the 12th century and it is said that a radiant ‘blue’ young boy haunts its halls, or more specifically, the Pink Room. Guests report sightings of a blue ‘halo’ of light and wailings.

Apparently, recent renovation work also revealed a young boy inside a three-metre thick wall – or so it’s claimed, anyway.

Next up is Leap Castle in County Offlay, Ireland.

Don’t be fooled by its innocent name; nearly half of online reviews (41%) claim this is a castle haunted by ghouls, including a regular female spirit who will open and close doors.

Also listen out for footsteps and crowds talking, even though there’s no one in the room.

In third place, it’s Berry Pomeroy Castle, Devon – home to the White Lady and the Blue Lady.

Watch out for the latter, she is said to be quite nefarious – luring people to her tower, where they fall to their death. The Blue Lady is reportedly in constant mourning, having murdered her own baby, because her father was the child’s dad.

The White Lady spends most of her time in the basement dungeons, where she was imprisoned by her own sister, Eleanor, who was jealous of her sibling’s beauty.

Harsh.

There’s also Tutbury Castle, Burton-on-Trent, which has featured on the TV show Most Haunted (as has Chillingham Castle) and where Mary Queen of Scots once lived.

Keep your eye out for ‘The Keeper’ – who wears a full suit of armour and is apparently quite frightful, shouting ‘Get thee hence’ at passers-by.

And finally, in fifth place, it’s Glamis Castle in Scotland, where there have been 192 paranormal events.

It has a dark history, with a room called the Hangman’s Chamber and several ghosts, like the Tongueless Woman and the Monster of Glamis.

Yeah, we’re not staying the night in any of these places.
