A woman has shared a money-saving hack for creating a simple ‘fakeaway’ McDonald’s recipe for her kids.

Elly Mae, from Queensland, Australia, has six children and says she saves a fortune by making her own Happy Meals at home.

She spends around $10 (£5.50) on all of the ingredients for multiple DIY meals, and she says it certainly keeps her little ones happy.

The DIY Happy Meals are made from chicken nuggets and French fries that Elly simply warms up in the oven. She then presents them in individual paper bags to give her kids that takeaway feeling.

The meals also come with apple juice, Pop Tops and individual yoghurt pouches.

Elly puts the food inside a Happy Meal box along with a sweet and sour sauce from McDonalds.

She even puts the yoghurt pouches in red boxes, which are available online, for added authenticity, and she makes the bags for the chips and chicken nugget from baking paper.

‘Fakeaway Maccas for my kids,’ Elly wrote on Facebook.

‘Around $10 and I’ll get multiple “Happy Meals” out of it. Instead of two Maccas for the same price.

Other parents who saw the post were seriously impressed with Elly’s efforts, some even admitted to doing the same thing at home.

‘What an amazing idea,’ wrote one woman.

‘We do fakeaway Maccas too!’ added another.

‘My kids love it, but I make the nuggets with chicken breast, coat them in panko crumbs and cut up big potatoes into fries. It’s so much nicer, even if I join in and make a Happy Meal for myself.’

So if you want to treat your kids to a Happy Meal at a fraction of the cost, this is the way to do it.

All it takes is a little forward planning and a bit of effort with the presentation. We think it’s worth it.
