Whether it’s getting down on one knee in front of the Eiffel Tower or wrapping the ring up for Christmas, most proposal ideas feel like they’ve been done before.

But one man has thought up an inventive way to ask his girlfriend to be his wife, after his original plan was ruined due to coronavirus.

Walter Marano, 27, had wanted to pop the question to his partner of five years, Sophia Florio, 24, in Italy.

But their holiday was cancelled due to the pandemic and he decided to bring a taste of Italy to them instead.

He arranged a romantic meal at Circolo Popolare, a restaurant in Fitzrovia, London.

Waiters brought out heart-shaped pizzas with the words ‘will you marry me?’ written across them in crust.

Shocked receptionist Sophia said ‘yes’ and diners burst into cheers for the couple – before they tucked into their meal.

‘I love pizza – so it was the perfect proposal,’ Sophia said. ‘It was a complete surprise. I had no idea it was coming.

‘We were disappointed when our holiday to Italy was cancelled – so decided to go for Italian food to make up for it.

‘I was so shocked when the pizzas read ‘will you marry me?’ – I can’t wait to spend the rest of my life with Walter.’

Sophia had not suspected the proposal after Walter, a barber, took her on a weekend away to London in September, 2020.

‘It was beautiful and felt like we were actually in Italy,’ Sophia said.

‘We sat down and he ordered a shot.

‘They hadn’t even taken our food order and I thought: “It’s taking ages then the next thing I know I had a pizza in front of me saying “will you marry me?”‘ Sophia said.

Walter pulled out the ring from his pocket and Sophia said yes before standing up to give him a kiss.

‘Everyone was cheering for us, it was amazing,’ Sophia said.

‘It was the best feeling ever.

‘Even with an audience it was very intimate and romantic.’

After five years together, Walter knew that he had to get it right for fussy Sophia.

‘I wouldn’t have said yes if it wasn’t perfect,’ she said.

‘Luckily for him, I love London and it was so romantic so I had to say yes.’

Walter has had the ring for nearly a year and when the holiday got cancelled, he decided he couldn’t wait any longer.

But the couple hope to return to the country soon as they plan to get married there in two years time and hope to start being able to look for venues soon.
