A sprightly great-grandma who asked for a motorbike for her 90th birthday was delighted when family and friends threw her a surprise party in the street.
Annie Henderson celebrated with around 30 neighbours social distancing in the street singing Happy Birthday to her.
The 90-year-old was clueless about the surprise celebrations and was so shy she didn’t want to venture out the house. But she soon got in to the spirit of the party.
Great-gran-of-six Annie, who would ordinarily welcome neighbour’s children into her home before the coronavirus pandemic made that impossible, had no idea what was in store to celebrate her milestone birthday.
But she was overwhelmed with happiness when she saw just how much effort had been put into the surprise bash.
Annie also has three daughters, who all joined in the celebrations, and eight grandchildren.
Granddaughter Lia Hunter, 39, said Annie was thrilled by a piper who was hired to entertain her, and started dancing on the driveway of her home in Lochyside, Fort William, Scottish Highlands.
‘It was a big surprise but she doesn’t like the spotlight being on her,’ says Lia.
‘She had a dance in the driveway. If I have half her energy when I’m her age I will be happy.
‘She is very energetic for her age. She really likes being outside in the garden and she’s always been very active and full of energy.
‘She’s got a lot of friends on the street who came out of the house for it.’
The piper played Happy Birthday and some Scottish jigs as around 30 friends, family and neighbours stood safely apart from each other.
Younger sister Bella McInnes, 87, also went to the outdoors party on Wednesday, 14th October.
Annie’s daughters Anne MacKenzie, 64, Helen Henderson, 63, and Rosemarie Henderson, 66, all attended to celebrate the special occasion with their mum.
Mum-of-one Lia, who works as an early years teacher, added: ‘She was really excited.
‘She said all she would like for her birthday was a piper. But when we were out for a drive on Sunday, she said all she wanted was a motorbike for her birthday.
‘Maybe we can go up and down the driveway.’
We love this energy Annie, and we hope your dream of owning a motorbike comes true.
