Macmillan Cancer Support’s coffee morning is usually held at cafes, shops, schools, offices and hospitals every September.
Friends and colleagues gather around to eat cake and drink endless cups of tea and coffee – all in the name of charity!
It is one of the UK’s largest charity events, raising £27.5m last year with around 200,000 people registering to take part, according to their website.
However, with lockdown restrictions and social distancing policy, the event may look a lot different this year. Here’s what you need to know.
When is the Macmillan Coffee Morning?
The official date for the World’s Biggest Coffee Morning is today (Friday, September 25).
However, you can hold yours whenever and however you like.
The first ever Coffee Morning took place in 1990.
A few friends gathered over coffee and donate the cost of their cuppa to Macmillan in the process.
They raised more than they had expected, and so did it again the next year.
The Coffee Morning has since then raised over £275 million for Macmillan.
How can you take part in Macmillan Coffee Morning?
So, now we have your attention with talks of cakes and coffee, how can you get involved?
Macmillan has suggested that fundraisers should host a socially-distanced Coffee Morning safely from their doorstep, or do a sponsored run, walk or cycle.
People could also set up a virtual coffee morning or make a donation online.
Macmillan have laid out some guidelines to enjoy a Covid-19 friendly Coffee Morning:
- BYOT – Bring Your Own Thermos on a walk
- Coffee Cake away – a takeaway service
- Have a cup of coffee in your garden with a neighbour and then pass some pence through the fence
- Doorstep deliveries
- Set up a coffee and cake stall for people to pick up as they pass by
To find out more about hosting a coffee morning, please visit the Macmillan website.
When you sign up to host a Coffee Morning, you’ll get a free fundraising kit full of receive bunting, cake decorations, recipes, stickers, a collection box and more.
So what are you waiting for? Raising money to help fight cancer is a piece of cake.
