New Pret subscription service lets you have five coffees a day for £20 a month

We’re all being told to go back to work in an effort to save high street chains like Pret a Manger, so it’s time to start getting used to paper cups and packaged flapjacks galore.

Pret themselves have sweetened the deal for caffeine addicts, too, with their new monthly subscription offer that allows you up to five (yes, 5!) coffees a day for £20 a month.

Any ‘barista prepared’ drink can be selected via your phone, with bosses at the chain hoping that YourPret Barista will be a digital strategy that get people back in stores.

That remit doesn’t just include your standard cup of coffee, but everything from lattes to smoothies and frappes.

Each drink will need to be ordered at least half an hour apart to avoid people abusing the deal.

Customers who make use of every single coffee or smoothie they’re entitled to will get each beverage for just 13p, which would be hard to come by even in the cheapest outlets.

How much caffeine is safe in one day?

The daily recommended upper limits for caffeine is 400mg or 300mg for pregnant women.

These were the recommended upper daily limits as part of a previous large-scale review of caffeine safety carried out in 2003.

This would roughly translate as four cups of coffee a day, or around 14 cups of tea if not pregnant.

Again, these are upper limits and not a challenge to see how many highly-caffeinated drinks you can sink without feeling like your heart will pop out of your chest.

The £20 a month fee was described by the BBC as an ‘introductory offer’, so there’s no clear outline on whether it’ll go up.

Even if it was doubled, however, that could still work out at 26p per coffee, which is not to be sniffed at.

Briony Raven, Pret’s director of coffee and packaging, said: ‘It’s Pret’s way of doing loyalty.

‘It’s about giving people an easy choice when they come back into their everyday routine.’

The scheme will launch next Tuesday.

If you have been summoned back to your desk, it’s certainly an attractive prospect.

Just because you can, though, doesn’t necessary mean you should. Please caffeine responsibly, because your colleagues are probably on edge enough without you jittering and rocking in the corner.
