In our weekly series, What I Rent, we take you inside people’s rented homes to get an honest look at the reality of renting; from the fancy apartments to the not-so-great houseshares.
This week we’re chatting with Gilda Joelle Osborn, 28, a model and nutritionist.
Gilda rents a home in Alabama, US, with her boyfriend and their dog, Sasha.
Hey, Gilda! How much do you pay to live here?
My boyfriend and I rent this house for $4,000 a month. Bills (electricity, cable, internet) are around $300 a month.
And what do you get for what you pay?
Four bedrooms, three bathrooms, a living room, a kitchen, and a garden.
Do you think you have a good deal?
Yes, we got a great deal and I love the area. I am very happy here.
Do you like the area?
We live in Birmingham, Alabama, in a very family-orientated community.
It is a great growing culinary scene – as I am very into health, fitness and wellness the area appeals to me as it is a real foodie town.
There is great hiking nearby and beautiful lakes to go camping on the weekends.
How did you find the house?
I drove by a year ago and saw a for sale sign- the property was a new build so it was a growing construction site. We contacted the landlord and took it from there.
How have you made the house feel like home?
We have a black German Shepherd called Sasha, the home is very inviting and decorated with warming colors, plush, comfortable furniture, a cozy fireplace, I cook at home six days a week and entertain friends there also.
Are there any issues with the house?
The home is a new build so we haven’t run into any problems so far!
Do you feel like you have enough space?
Yes, I have more than enough space!
Do you have plans to move again any time soon?
No plans to move any time soon, I am very happy here. I love the area, the home, my neighbors.
And what about owning a home – is that a dream of yours or are you happy renting?
I would love to own a home in the near future. I am currently saving up for a deposit. That is my five-year goal!
Sounds good. Shall we have a look around?
What I Rent is a weekly series that’s out every Tuesday at 10am.
Check back next week to have another nose around a rented property.
How to get involved in What I Rent
What I Rent is Metro.co.uk’s weekly series that takes you inside the places people are renting, to give us all a better sense of what’s normal and how much we should be paying.
If you fancy taking part, please email whatirent@metro.co.uk. You’ll need to take pictures of your kitchen, living room, bathroom, and bedroom, plus a few photos of you in your bedroom or living area.
Make sure you get permission from your housemates! You’ll also need to be okay with sharing how much you’re paying for rent, as that’s pretty important.
We're not just after the prettiest places out there, by the way. We want the reality of renting, so if you're currently renting a place you hate, we'd love to see that too (and sympathise greatly!).
