Gin, the cat, has had a rough few weeks – but in true feline spirit, has shown that adversity only makes you stronger.
The nine-year-old ginger cat had been out and about on a walk in his local neighbourhood of Suffolk when disaster struck and he was hit by a car.
Tragically the driver must not have noticed (or drove off) as Gin, injured and in pain, limped back to his house where owner Liz Allen found him in the garden.
‘I knew straight away that something wasn’t right,’ said the 40-year-old race horse stud manager.
‘I noticed a fracture in his hind leg and called the vets straight away.’
Unfortunately, the injury was serious and would be life-altering for poor Gin.
After taking an X-ray, the veterinarians noticed that he had a ‘complicated multiple fracture of the tibia, which would be impossible to repair’ – and so, they recommended amputating one of Gin’s hind legs.
To make matters worse, the feline was diagnosed with arthritis in the other leg, which complicated matters.
‘Gin suffers from severe arthritis in the unaffected leg, so amputation could have had a real negative impact on this,’ said a spokesperson for Haughley & Thurston Vets, a My Family Vets Practice in Suffolk.
Liz was given too options: amputate the leg – with the risk of problems in the future – or put Gin to sleep.
The human refused to let go of her lovely pet, and so the vets went ahead with the surgery.
And it’s good they did, as Gin appears to have made a full recovery and is doing just fine on three legs.
In fact, the ‘spoiled top cat’, as his owner describes him, has been relishing in the special treatment at home since his operation.
Gin now gets to sleep with Liz, her partner and kitten Scrumpy in the bed, and is fed treats on the regular.
But after what he’s been through, he deserves it.
Liz said: ‘It wasn’t long before he returned to his usual self.
‘He was back to walking very quickly, and full of energy.’
Though the cheeky cat doesn’t seem to have learned his lesson, as he still tries to escape the garden for more adventure walks.
She added: ‘He’s escaped twice. Just one day after he started walking again, he barged past me and escaped through the cat flap.
‘His recovery has been truly inspiring.
‘Everyone at the practice was so helpful and reassuring.
‘I’m very grateful – Gin wouldn’t be alive today if not for the wonderful team.’
