Around two years ago, we all became aware of BDE.
Big Dick Energy. We convinced ourselves that Pete Davidson had it for a very brief period while he was dating Ariana Grande – but even though it was short-lived for Pete, the concept of BDE is enduring.
Big Dick Energy is all about the vibe you give off. An implicit confidence and self-assurance that gives the clear impression that you are well endowed – regardless of whether or not you actually are. And you can possess BDE even if you don’t have a penis.
Now there’s a new BDE on the block that has nothing to do with genitalia – Big Divorce Energy.
This is the palpable vibe of confidence, self-assurance and new-found freedom that flows from the very pores of someone who is newly divorced, or soon to be divorced – and it is a beautiful sight to behold.
The first recorded evidence of Big Divorce Energy can be found in a photo of Nicole Kidman taken after finalising her divorce papers from Tom Cruise in 2001.
She is standing in the sun with a look of determined joy on her face, head thrown back, arms stretched wide, basking in, one can only assume, the tantalizing promise of her imminent singledom.

It’s an image that sparked a thousand memes, and perfectly embodies the concept of Big Divorce Energy.
Of course, divorce is often a sad, scary, tumultuous process. It is heartbreak, the breakdown of the life you thought you wanted, and it takes time to grieve for that.
BDE is what comes next.
Once you have reconciled your grief, come to terms with the closing of the chapter, taking that final step can be incredibly empowering and fill you with a powerful inner radiance.
Big Divorce Energy is making a comeback of late thanks to a spate of high-profile celebrity divorces.
Miley Cyrus and Liam Hemsworth got divorced after less than a year of marriage in January, and after the pair split Miley was pictured on a boat kissing reality television star Kaitlynn Carter – which is a clear example of BDE.
Miley was also pictured out shopping, looking ‘stress-free’ just days after finalising her divorce from her former hubby.
As the icing on the cake, Miley then wore an audaciously killer outfit to her divorce hearing. All black, plunging neckline, big glasses, barely-there stilettos, and absolutely zero f***s.
Mary-Kate Olsen made headlines a few weeks back after filing for divorce from Olivier Sarkozy after four and a half years of marriage during quarantine.
Reality star Kristin Cavallari is also divorcing her husband Jay Cutler and they have put their enormous Nashville mansion on the market.
In the past, Big Divorce Energy has only really been attributed to men.
A 2019 Mel Magazine article said Amazon owner Jeff Bezos embodied Big Divorce Energy after splitting from his wife of 25 years because of his ‘updated clothes, the clean-shaven dome, the ripped revenge bod’.
But we think the updated definition of Big Divorce Energy is less about the aesthetics, and more about an attitude, a vibe, a powerful force that people can feel as soon as you walk into a room.
It makes sense that women are more likely to have BDE after a relationship breakdown than men. A 2016 study found that women cope better with divorce than men, that they are ‘happier, more confident and less likely to self destruct’.
There’s an enduring image of divorced women as bitter and jaded, while divorced men are portrayed as happy to break free. But according to this research, 75% of divorced women report having no regrets over the decision to part, whereas just 61% of divorced men say the same.
Another study found that divorced fathers are more likely than divorced mothers to experience depression, and more likely to self-medicate with alcohol.
So if you notice a positive change in a friend who has been divorced recently – Big Divorce Energy might be behind it.
It’s transformative, empowering, and flips the tragic ‘woman scorned’ stereotype completely on its head.
Embracing BDE could be just the thing to help someone transition through an incredibly difficult period of their lives.
