Coffins can cost hundreds of pounds so it makes sense to invest in it early.
While it might be dark to think about, death is pretty much the only guarantee in life.
So why not go for something that serves you in both life and death – like a hybrid bookshelf that doubles as a coffin?
The eco-responsible furniture is created by designer William Warren who says there are mixed receptions to his creation.
Some don’t like to be reminded of their mortality while others are happy knowing they’re prepared.
And the instructions to reassemble the shelf into a coffin are also free to download.
The brass plate under the bottom shelf, that tells the story about this transformation, can be flipped over and your dates can be inscribed into it.
It really is a two-in-one.
‘The design is a few years old now,’ William tells Metro.co.uk.
‘I developed as an experiment to see if I could design sentimentality into furniture.
‘It was originally designed for a company I worked with in Japan but they turned it down as it was a bit much for the Japanese sensibility.
‘I produced a few sets and sold them here in the UK before I realised it was better if I sent out instructions for people to make themselves. They’ve been sent out free ever since to anyone who asks.’
He adds: ‘If you don’t think about it in advance, you’ll be buried or burnt in a chipboard box with paper that looks like wood and plastic handles that look like brass.
‘Your grieving family will pay £400 for this £40 piece of rubbish because nobody argues with an undertaker.
‘Better to have something you’ve made, something solid and something that has lived with you in life and has the stains and scars to prove it.’
William’s customers are big fans of the idea and have left several comments on his website expressing interest in buying their own coffins.
