One thing that’s never been answered for EastEnders fans is how on earth everybody is able to afford stunning townhouses in a market street in East London.
No matter their occupation, every Walford resident seems to be able to stump up for houses which – were soapland the real world – would be priced in the millions.
And it turns out that the price would be roughly £1.5 million, as evidenced by this house for sale in the street that inspired the show’s Albert Square.
It’s not quite Walford itself, but Fassett Square in Hackney where this property is located was planned to be the original filming place of EastEnders.
However, due to the fact that it was designated in a high trafficked area, there was a hospital, which is now closed, and real people lived in the Square, the idea was soon wiped.
To this day, though, several features of Fassett Square are similar to the Albert Square concepts (such as the gardens and the Victorian houses) and the layout of the Square was helped to design Albert Square.
As for the house itself, it’s got four bedrooms and two bathrooms, as well as two large reception rooms. There’s also a garden, which is something of a rarity in London.
Whoever possesses the riches of Mick Carter or Kat Slater will be treated to off-street parking, and be within walking distance to Kingsland Road, London Fields, and Dalston Junction Overground.
The large, modern kitchen is ideal for having a cuppa and talking over the affairs, murders, or natural disasters that have occurred to your friends and family in what seems like unbelievably bad luck for one small group of people.
Sadly, you can’t pop down to the Vic – only to be told to get out after you’ve had one too many – but there are pubs, restaurants, and all sorts of nightlife nearby, as well as a lido in London Fields (just don’t jump in in your wedding dress a la Ronnie Mitchell).
Brad Suter, head of Savills Hackney office comments: ‘Located in a prime part of East London with popular London Fields and Broadway Market nearby, this is a stunning end-terrace house situated in famous Fassett Square, a private garden square with residents’ only access.
‘Beautifully designed, this would make the perfect house for any family to grow into.’
Time to get a job on the market and save up.
