Like many people, Liz Reed was forced to spend her birthday this year under lockdown.

Her husband, Rob, however, had a cunning plan for the May 1 date, and put his DIY skills to good use for a tiki bar themed party in the garden.

39-year-old Liz lives in Chelmsford, Essex, with Rob 44, and their children Ella, 9, and Isaac, 6.

With Liz’s birthday approaching and no chance of being able to see family and friends, the family decided to get creative with a beach party in the garden.

The weather didn’t co-operate, which meant the party was taken indoors, but Rob’s surprise bar was a brilliant touch that was portable, made entirely from scratch, and totally free.

Liz told Metro.co.uk: ‘I expected my husband to have maybe got some cocktails organised but instead for a surprise he had made me a bar from old pallets.

‘He said he got a long pallet from work and cut it into three sections. He put them on top of each other, making sure they were the same size and would sit on top of each other.

‘He then cut a piece of wood to sit on top to make the bar top. He also slotted a couple of pieces of wood inside the bar for shelves.

‘He said it was very quick and easy – and depending on what size pallets you can get hold of you can make different size bars and be creative.’

Rob used screws to put the whole thing together, and jazzed up the living room with props like coconuts and inflatable palm trees.

The whole family donned Hawaiian Lei necklaces and partied the day away, and will be cracking the clever bar out once again with others when lockdown is over.

Liz continued: ‘We had a lovely day celebrating complete with some inflatable palm trees and props Rob had ordered on eBay.

‘Now the bar is in the garden and we have a tiki bar for summer. If we can’t go on holiday this year we can bring the beach bar to us!’
