Just because we are stuck at home doesn’t mean we can’t have a little fun.
Museums around the world may have closed their doors, which means we can’t see our favorite artworks in the flesh.
But The Getty Museum in Los Angeles has come up with a creative solution to ensure that art can be shared with the masses during this quarantine period.
It has challenged people to recreate some of their favourite works at home and then share their artistic interpretations on social media. So everyone can get a daily dose of culture, but have fun, too.
Of course, there are some rules to make the task slightly harder. In a Tweet announcing the challenge, the Getty Museum outlined what these were.
It said: ‘We challenge you to recreate a work of art with objects (and people) in your home. Choose your favorite artwork. Find three things lying around your house. Recreate the artwork with those items. And share with us.’
It’s safe to say that some people really have delivered.
The Getty Museum’s social media lead, Sarah Waldorf, revealed last week that the museum’s social media had been ‘flooded’ with makeover masterpieces.
She told Yahoo Lifestyle: ‘Our audience told us loud and clear that they wanted to see beautiful artworks, learn more about art from home, and find delight on social media.
‘We wanted to offer up a creative challenge to find refuge from the uncertain state of the world and to spark excitement to get creative — no extra materials required.’
Sarah explained that the challenge was inspired by Dutch Instagram user @tussenkunstenquarantaine (which translates as ‘between art and quarantine’) – an account which shares photos of people reimagining famous paintings.
