Robert Ormsby had planned to propose to his partner Patsy Murdoch during a holiday to Reykjavik this week, but due to the coronavirus outbreak, the trip was called off.
The couple, from Sevenoaks, Kent, had already chosen a ring together but Robert was waiting for the perfect moment to ask the question.
He decided that they would still get engaged in Iceland – but in the store rather than the country.
As a manager for the supermarket in the 80s and 90s, he knew it could be the perfect alternative.
On a trip to the supermarket, he found an empty aisle and asked Patsy to be his wife.
Of course, she said yes and laughed at his idea.
The couple posed for a picture at the checkouts before they left the Tonbridge store and the picture was posted online, where it went viral.
Robert is a charge nurse at Maidstone and Tunbridge Wells NHS Trust and Patsy worked for Hospice in the Weald and they said they are glad they were able to cheer people up at this difficult time.
They also want to use the attention to praise the hard work of all those working in the NHS to save lives during the outbreak.
The 58-year-old told Patsy he needed to nip into the store to get something, before finding the empty aisle and dropping to one knee.

Initially embarrassed, Patsy, also 58, laughed, said yes and popped the ring on her finger, admitting she had been a bit suspicious when he put a suit on but thought he was going to ask her in a restaurant.
The brand has even agreed to pay for the couple’s honeymoon (this time to the country) when they are able to travel again.
Congratulations Robert and Patsy!
