Most of us are now staying home as much as possible during the coronavirus outbreak, but you still need food.
Supermarket shelves are empty and it’s probably not ideal to be making lots of trips.
So can you still get your groceries delivered during the outbreak, as normally, you need to meet the driver and bring all the items into your house, or the driver may carry it in for you?
If you are social distancing because of an underlying health condition or if you have been advised to self isolate, you won’t want to have to speak to the driver.
The good news is, that like takeaway delivery companies, supermarkets are allowing contactless deliveries during the outbreak.
Most major supermarkets are members of the British Retail Consortium, who have issued some advice.
Andrew Opie, Director of Food & Sustainability at the British Retail Consortium, said: ‘Most BRC members are more than happy for the majority of online deliveries to be delivered on doorsteps when customers have suggested that they are self-isolating.
‘Despite difficult times, retailers strive to provide the best service for their customers, both online and in-store and are working as hard as they can to ensure consumers have access to whatever products they want.’
You will need to let the supermarket know when you order that you need the items to be left at the door, by contacting customer services.
However, the bad news is that you can’t order alcohol or any items where you need to provide ID. Usually, the driver can verify your age or ask for ID on the doorstep and this would not be possible.
The other issue is that with increased demand, it’s becoming more difficult to find available slots for home deliveries but the BRC said that supermarkets are doing all they can to cope with demand.
Andrew Opie added: ‘Retailers have seen an uptick in online deliveries and are taking all necessary steps to meet this rise in demand so that all consumers continue to have access to the products they need.’
If you need a slot, keep checking all supermarkets frequently as slots may open up due to cancellations at any time.
You should also be aware that many items are out of stock online and some supermarkets are restricting the amount you can purchase. It’s difficult but you will need to be as patient.
