British Pie Week: These are the nation’s favourites – do you agree?

If you’re not sure what to have for lunch today, might we suggest a pie?

British Pie Week has arrived and in honour of the occasion, Uber Eats has revealed which fillings Brits prefer the most in their delectable pastry dishes.

The findings have been split into savoury and sweet (so you can have your pie and eat the other one, too – or something to that effect).

Without further ado, here they are: the top five in each category.

Let’s start with the desserts.

Perhaps American Pie has inspired the UK’s bakers, as apple pie takes home the crown for best sweet pie – let’s just hope that it’s not for the same purposes (on a serious note, don’t masturbate with a hot pie, please).

In second place is banoffee, with its biscuit base filled with bananas, cream and toffee, followed by cherry in third place, then pecan and chocolate.

The data from the food delivery company also revealed that when it comes to pies, 64% of us actually prefer savoury fillings.

It’s not all that surprising when you consider that the humble savoury pie is a staple in pretty much every British pub across the country (and the amount of time we spend in the pub).

The top five sweet pies

  1. Apple
  2. Banoffee
  3. Cherry
  4. Pecan
  5. Chocolate

Nabbing the top spot is the creamy chicken and mushroom, followed by the classic steak and kidney pie, stuffed with diced beef, kidney, fried onion and gravy.

Take away the kidney and you’ve got the UK’s third favourite pie – simply steak – with beef and onion coming in fourth.

Surprisingly, Shepherd’s pie isn’t the big hitter, but at least it’s on the list, at number five.

  1. Chicken & mushroom
  2. Steak & kidney
  3. Steak
  4. Beef & onion
  5. Shepherd’s

Although these are the pies we prefer as a nation, the results actually differ a fair bit when split into areas.

For instance, Londoners like to tuck into apple pie and chicken and mushroom, but further up north in Manchester, the cheese & onion pie reigns, alongside meat and potato.

However, northerners also prefer apple pie when it comes to sweet treats, as do those living in Newcastle and Edinburgh – but the latter would rather tuck into a steak pie.

In Liverpool, roasted onion with gravy makes an appearance and in Birmingham, you get chicken and mushroom, as well as steak & kidney.

Oh, and apple – apparently, we Brits love apple pie, regardless of where we live in the country.

So, do you agree?
