With Valentine’s Day around the corner, it stands to reason that many people are planning to have sex with their significant other or casual hook-up this week.
Some lovers may be looking to spice things up, while others stick to true-and-trusted methods to get themselves off.
But actually how adventurous are Brits in the bedroom?
New research, based on Google search terms over the past month and conducted by Onbuy.com, suggests that most of us prefer the classics when it comes to sex.
Although there a few distinguishable exceptions, one of which is no doubt inspired by Love Island.
Here’s the full list, in case you’d like to try them for yourself.
10. Pretzel
As you might imagine, the pretzel looks, well, like a pretzel.
Also sometimes known as the pretzel dip, it can be done in one of many ways, but we prefer the classic: the woman lying on her side, with one leg between (under) her partner, and the other leg over his hip, as he stands on his knees.
Another version sees you both on your knees, with alternating legs forward (your right, their left or vice versa) and holding each other as you have sex – but this one is a bit trickier to pull off as you’ll have to keep your balance throughout.
9. Doggy style
The name says is all, with 1,220 people searching for doggy style last month.
One person bends over, the other person stands behind them on their knees.
Can be done vaginally or anally – but make sure to lube up properly, if it’s the latter.
8. Spooning
Ever heard the term spooning leads to forking?
This position is pretty self-explanatory and can be quite intimate, plus gives the big spoon ample access to use their hands on the small spoon.
You can also try the ‘bent’ spoon, where the small spoon leans forward and holds onto the mattress, if you want to speed things up a notch.
7. Lotus
Do you like to look your partner deep in their eyes while you’re having sex?
Try the Lotus.
The person penetrating (male or female with a strap-on) sits on the bed, while the other person sits on top of them, with their legs around their waist.
Put on some smooth tunes, light some candles and enjoy.
6. Standing
Standing sex is a great opportunity to get creative.
All you really need is a wall, meaning you can do it in the shower, the bedroom or even out in the garden, if you have a shed to lean against – though it might be a tad cold to do this month.
You can wrap a leg around your partner’s waist or have them lift you up against the wall, face the wall and bend forward or give the standing Halloween witch a go.
5. Reverse Cowgirl
Basically, riding – but with your bum facing your lover.
Some people like to bend forward and hold onto their partner’s ankles for stability, while others sit straight up.
Do whatever feels best but take care not to bend too far forward (and hurt yourself or your partner’s penis).
4. Cowgirl
Reverse the reverse cowgirl, and you’re there (riding while facing your partner).
3. Missionary
More than 11,000 people searched for the trusted missionary position.
It makes sense; the missionary can be sensual, slow, speedy, cosy or kinky.
You can mix it up, too; throw a leg or two over the shoulder, hold the legs spread apart or lie tight together for some romantic love-making.
2. 69
It was close, but oral sex has beaten out the missionary position for the second spot this year by a margin of 220 searches.
Havent tried the 69 yet? Look at the actual numbers to get an idea of how it works: one person on the bottom, one on top and both with their head between the other’s legs.
Or spice it up this year with the 70 sex position, which is kind of like the 69, but more athletic.
1. The Eagle
Last summer, Curtis Pritchard broke the internet (or at least one sex site) after announcing his love for the eagle sex position.
However, there are actually several variations, including the soaring eagle, the standing eagle and the flying eagle. Bird sounds are optional.
To simplify matters, here is our handy guide to how each one works.
