If you’ve ever been in a relationship with someone who snores, you’ll know the hell of lying next to their snorts and heavy breaths night after night.
As well as being absolutely rage-inducing, it turns out that sleeping next to someone who snores can be genuinely bad for your health.
A new study found that the noise pollution caused by a partner’s snoring can raise your blood pressure.
Researchers from John Hopkins School of Medicine analysed 162 snorers and their partners, and found that one in seven created such high levels of noise while they snoozed that they could increase their partner’s blood pressure.
14% of those studied had snores with decibel levels above 53 – about as loud as a dishwasher going full blast.
All that noise can prevent partners of snorers from getting proper rest, leading to cardiovascular stress and difficulty regulating stress hormones.
The researchers wrote: ‘Snoring represents a source of noise pollution and bed partners can suffer from unhealthy sound levels’.
We know that noise pollution can cause all sorts of health problems. The European Environment Agency estimates that noise pollution causes 12,000 premature deaths and 48,000 cases of heart disease annually in Europe.
Of course, if someone suddenly starts snoring it’s worth chatting to a GP to check why this might be.
But in the meantime, partners should make sure their sleep isn’t wrecked by their partner’s snoring.
That might mean trying out anti-snoring pillows, strips, or sprays, or going straight for the ear plugs.
