Shrove Tuesday: The best places to get pancakes in London

Fluffy, soft, light – there are so many ways to describe the humble pancake.

Ahead of Shrove Tuesday, which takes place next week (25 February), we’ve put together a guide of the best places in London to get a pancake or crêpe.

From Oreo-inspired pancakes to matcha flavours, Scottish pancake hamburgers (yes, really) or classic syrup-drizzled goodness, you’ll be spoilt for choice.

Get your fork ready, it’s time to eat.

Dominique Ansel Bakery, Belgravia

If there’s anyone who knows how to make a crêpe, it’s Dominique Ansel.

After all, this French chef was born in the country where the delicate dish was invented.

This Shrove Tuesday, head down to his Belgravia bakery to munch on the Bretagne, a Florentine-style, buckwheat super-fine pancake stuffed with Gruyere cheese, oyster mushrooms and kale and topped with a fried egg.

Pancs, Covent Garden

You can’t really do a pancake round-up without including Pancs.

The Covent Garden cafés speciality is (you guessed it) pancakes.

From breakfast pancs with salmon, egg, cheddar, spinach and hollandaise to a Mexican-inspired dish with coleslaw, beans, pickles and chipotle and everything in-between (like this beautiful Oreo chocolate creation), you have endless varieties to sample.

If you want a touch of luxury, we recommend the Duck Confit Pancs.

Mr Fogg’s House of Botanicals, Fitzrovia

Fancy a tipple with your stack?

Mr Fogg’s House of Botanicals in Fitzrovia is offering a special cocktails and pancake menu for Shrove Tuesday.

There are three petit pancake selections to choose from, all £7 each: bacon, blueberry and maple syrup; salted caramel ice cream, balsamic glaze and caramelised nut mix or a savoury crêpe drizzled with bechamel and mushroom sauce.

A perfect pre-dinner snack.

Burr & Co, Bloomsbury

Make your way to Bloomsbury to sample Burr & Co’s limited-time-only menu, created especially for this occasion.

Those with a sweet tooth can drool over chocolate sauce and roasted hazelnut or dig into winter berries and raspberry coulis, while savoury choices include spinach and Emmental cheese pancakes or Dulche de leche crêpes.

The menu will run from Monday (24 February) until 1 March and all of the dishes cost £7.

Mac & Wild, Devonshire Square

Leave it to Mac & Wild to create something out of the ordinary for Shrove Tuesday.

Pancakes or crêpes? That’s so last year – 2020 is all about pancake burgers.

Stuffed inside a pancake bun is a beef patty, melted reblochon cheese, pickles, gravy and mac & cheese.

There’s nothing wee after this dish.

Avobar, Covent Garden

If you’re looking for an Insta-worthy pancake, it’s Avobar you’re after.

The chefs are flippin’ up pancakes made with avo butter and matcha next week,

Flippin’ up a tasty delight, their pancakes are made with avo butter and matcha and can be swapped from savoury to sweet with the choice of house-cured salmon or bacon with a turmeric poached egg or caramelised banana drizzled with glossy maple syrup.

Where The Pancakes Are, London Bridge

The clue is in the name: this is indeed Where The Pancakes Are.

We could try to explain the various options on the menu, but that would take us all day – because the entire menu is filled with buttermilk batter goodness (there’s a vegan and dairy-free recipe too).

If we had to recommend just one pancake, it would be the Banana Praline Marshmallow: pancakes, banana, hazelnut-sunflower-cocoa-nib praline, basil marshmallow and your choice of chocolate or sea salter caramel.

Oh, yes.

The Curtain, Shoreditch

It’s nice to have options, but sometimes you just want a classic.

For a no-muss, no-fuss but still yummy stack, shoot over to Shoreditch and take a seat at The Curtain.

On Shrove Tuesday, the hotel’s rooftop brasserie, Lido, is doing a bottomless pancake brunch for £15 per person.

Apple Butter Café, Seven Dials

For a cosy experience, pop down to Seven Dials and find the Apple Butter Café.

There will be a bespoke menu on Shrove Tuesday, featuring four sweet and savoury pancakes: English rhubarb and rose compote with honeycomb and Chantilly cream; banana and salted caramel; lotus biscuit and chocolate ganache or creamed mushrooms and tarragon.

Count us in.

Darwin & Wallace, multiple venues

Forget ordinary ingredients; Darwin & Wallace is pulling out all the stops for Shrove Tuesday.

Munch on kimchi pancakes with smoked salmon, spring onion and basil mayo; sweet ricotta pancakes topped with whipped espresso butter, pecan and apricot; vegan caramelised banana pancakes drizzled with maple syrup and coconut yogurt or tuck into ricotta pancakes with chimichurri, chilli and coriander.

You’ve got eight locations to choose from, but we’d go with No 32 in Clapham Old Town, because you can sit under the covered rooftop while you dig into your stack.

Margaux, South Kensington

The French restaurant is offering an unusual twist on the classic crêpe until 25 February.

Introducing the Cointreau Crêpes Suzette, a delectable dish that is topped with caramelised orange slices and flambéed Cointreau.

It’s served alongside a Cointreau Margarita.

Matcha and Beyond, Chelsea

Top with berries and coconut yoghurt, drizzle on some matcha honey or slather on some maple syrup.
