Grandad Zach, the 16-year-old Staffie with Alzheimer’s, ticks off his bucket list

Last month, we brought you the story of Grandad Zach, a Staffie who has Alzheimer’s.

The 16-year-old pooch doesn’t have much time left and staff at the sanctuary where he lives want to make lots of memories with him.

Touched by Zach’s story, the team at Metro.co.uk decided to arrange for him to tick off some of the items.

He had already enjoyed a McDonald’s double cheeseburger, a steak dinner, fancy meal out and Starbucks puppuccino.

Our reporter Elle Rudd travelled to Manchester, where Zach lives at Dogs 4 Rescue, to arrange more treats for the special dog.

First up, Zach made a paw print imprint at Minikin in Sale.

He then went on to have afternoon tea at Sugar Junction in the Northern Quarter.

That was followed by a photoshoot, complete with a little trim sat in a barber’s chair.

Zach then had pupcakes from Hello Little Cupcake and after his busy day, they finished with a nap in front of the fire at Marble Arch Inn.

Grandad Zach has lived at the sanctuary for about 15 months after he was rescued the day before he was due to be put down.

Ali Hudson, from Dogs 4 Rescue, tells Metro.co.uk: ‘He came from a pound down south. We got a photo of him and it said he was going to be put to sleep the next day.

‘We had space and we have a massive passion for those facing euthanasia in the pound.

‘He’s amazing. We didn’t know he had dementia when we took him but we would have taken him anyway. He has his little moments but he is still perfect in every way.’

Noticing that Grandad was starting to slow down, the staff decided to put the bucket list together.

Ali adds: ‘It’s sad but it’s beautiful at the same time. We’re doing all we can to make sure his last weeks are just the best they possibly can be.’

Although he’s now completed lots of the items, there’s still one big thing the staff want to do before he passes away – raise £5,000 as a legacy fund for him.

‘He wants to create a legacy so he can help other dogs in his situation after he’s gone to Rainbow Bridge,’ Ali says.

‘He’s been really lucky and was saved at the absolute last minute and there’s hundreds and hundreds more dogs like him who need our help.’

You can donate to Grandad Zach’s fund on his Justgiving page.
