Fancy filling your gut with fromage in a floating restaurant? Now you can.
Following the launch of The Cheese Suite pop-up, a hotel dedicated to cheese that ran briefly earlier this month, it seems Londoners just can’t get enough of the Gouda stuff (sorry).
And let’s not forget Pick & Cheese, the cheese conveyor belt restaurant that has its permanent home in KERB street food market in Seven Dials.
Introducing, The Cheese Barge: a double-decker barge with a 40-metre conveyor belt serving up the snazziest cheeses you can imagine.
It’s the latest launch from expert in all things cheese, Matthew Carver, who also runs the aforementioned Pick & Cheese, as well as The Cheese Bar, and is a World Cheese Awards judge.
In other words, he knows his Camembert from his cheddar, so you’ll get some quality fromage to munch on.
The floating restaurant is the result of a crowdfunding campaign that raised £130,000 in just six days (in case you were in any doubt of the level of dedication Brits feel for cheese) and will include an open air restaurant on the upper deck – for al fresco moments – as well as a 40-seater space on the lower deck.
As for the product selection, the barge will showcase top-notch ‘small producer’ cheese by home-grown talent.
Captain of the crew, head chef Reagan Ellenbroek has teamed up with exec chef Ross Keeling to create the menu – and cheese connoisseurs will not be disappointed.
You’ll be able to sample everything from Shropshire to Stilton by Cropwell Bishop to Baron Brigod bloomy-rind cheese from Fen Farm Dairy (a farm that has so far been run by three generations of the Crickmore family) and Quicke’s clothbound cheddar cheese.
There will also be other nibbles such as charcuterie, pickled walnuts and bacon-wrapped medjool dates.
No exact launch date has been announced yet, but we do know that The Cheese Barge will dock in Paddington Basin sometime in April.
All aboard? Yes, please.
