Blake Lively is making all the right choices.
Since wowing us as Serena in Gossip Girl her star has only become stronger and brighter.
But nothing will prepare you for her captivating turn as girl-next-door turned assassin, Stephanie Patrick, in her latest film The Rhythm Section
Reeling from the guilt she feels after her family’s death in a plane crash, Stephanie finds herself falling into a life of drugs and prostitution. Feeling lost and alone, she’s given a new chance at life when an investigative reporter approaches her for help, and informs her that the accident was actually a calculated terrorist attack. Determined to find the man who killed her family, Stephanie decides to take matters into her own hands and, when things take an unexpectedly dramatic turn, learn to become a spy from a former MI6 agent known as B (Jude Law).
Despite her determination to catch the man responsible for her family’s death, B won’t make things easy for Stephanie; not by a longshot.
Forcing her to run through the Scottish Highlands, train with guns, and even attacking her after refusing to teach her how to fight, B wants to prove Stephanie just doesn’t have what it takes. But instead of giving in she revels in the challenge, fighting tooth and nail to get the upper hand, and this is what makes her so deadly when she finally gets a shot at revenge.
You know you’re in good hands when long-term James Bond producer Barbara Broccoli and The Handmaid’s Tale director Reed Morano are involved, but it’s Blake who carries off the film.
This is the star like you’ve never seen her before and that’s not counting the many disguises she uses to complete her vengeful mission. In fact, the actress didn’t shy away from getting down and dirty, taking on killer fight scenes, thrilling car chases, engaging in hand-to-hand combat and fighting as if her life depends on it.
When legendary producer Barbara Broccoli said she would rather see women play a new spy character than have a female James Bond, she had a point and it’s about time we had a heroine like Stephanie. She’s an unforgiving badass who won’t let anyone take away her power. She just won’t do as she’s told, and that’s what’s so fascinating about her as a character.
Blake is phenomenal in the role, bringing Stephanie to life by portraying her vulnerability as well as her determination. To say we’re willing her to succeed in her pursuit of revenge is an understatement and you’ll be on the edge of your seat as you watch her battling against the odds as well as her own demons. Looking back at her time on Gossip Girl, we would never have guessed that one day we’d see Blake take on such a gritty, harrowing, tough girl role.
But, just like Stephanie, Blake defies all expectations and proves she can do whatever she wants AND do it well. She fully commits to the difficult subject matter and insane stunts, showing what a fearless actor she really is.
And all her hard work has clearly paid off, because The Rhythm Section is epic.
See it in cinemas 31st January 2020.
