Peeling off a face mask or a pore strip and seeing all the gunk that’s yanked away is incredibly satisfying. But that doesn’t make it a good idea.
Make a misjudgment and you could end up losing an eyebrow.
Luckily Navy Chandler didn’t have to say farewell to any of her important facial features – although she did lose some hair.
The aspiring comedian from Wichita, Kansas, found herself in struggle city after buying a cheap peel-off face mask for $1.99 (around £1.50) that refused to come off her skin.
Navy, 20, filmed herself desperately clawing at her face to remove the mask, saying it took her almost an hour to fully get rid of the sticky substance.
Navy said: ‘It was my day off and I bought a cheap peel off mask and after letting it dry, when I went to take it off, my skin almost came off with it.
‘On a scale of 1-10 of how hard it was to remove; I’d give it a solid 8
‘The pain was intense. It took all of the little hairs off my face, so it was like a full facial wax.
‘It took me about an hour to fully get it off, that was because I took breaks too.
‘I wouldn’t say it helped but my face was baby bottom smooth and glowing after the red irritation faded.
‘I would not recommend this to anybody but my enemies!’
We doubt Navy’s experience will inspire a deep desire to try peel-off skincare for yourself, but before you’re tempted it’s worth knowing that some experts don’t believe peel-off masks pose any benefits for your skin – and they may even cause you harm.
Andy Millward, facialist, aesthetician, and member of the British Association of Beauty Therapy and Cosmetology, told Metro.co.uk: ‘When removed, the mask is removing cells from the outer layer of skin (the stratum corneum) and any hair along with it. You only need to watch some of the videos that have gone viral to see the excruciating pain the mask users are in.’
‘It’s a little like using a chainsaw to prune a tree, when some hand-held garden shears would have done the job.
‘The chainsaw might get the job done, but you’ll end up stripping the tree back a little further than intended.
‘If you continue to use products that strip the skin of its natural oils (including harsh cleansers and exfoliants) then you’re likely to cause secondary issues.’
