One lucky man has been dissuaded from heading to his local boozer in a pretty great way: his wife built him his own pub in the back garden.
Jayne Tapper, 48, wanted to put a stop to her husband Paul going to the local pub nonstop.
So she created a pub at home – so at least she could keep Paul nearby.
The cabin-style pub, called Doghouse Inn, took five months to build and now hosts parties for Paul and his pals.
Jayne, a nurse from Newton Abbot, Devon, said: ‘My husband Paul, 53, an engineer had always loved popping down to our local, and I could never seem to keep him at home.
‘And so I got thinking – why not create my own pub, become my own lady and then I can really tell people – my husband’s in the doghouse!
‘We’d had to get the garden levelled out anyway, which had been expensive, over £15,000, and it seemed like the perfect opportunity for me to play out what I’d always wanted.
‘He won’t want to go to the local anymore – we have three basset hounds and a mate was able to create us a sign for the front of the pub, with one of our dogs, Rufus on.
‘Then I worked on making it like a proper pub – because to start with, it was just like a log house.
‘But I wanted people to be astounded so we continued to transform it into a mini pub.’
Jayne’s three children, Tom, 31, Lorren, 24 and Jack, 26, all love the pub in the garden too – as they’re able to have friends round and get in the drinks without spending all their cash.
The pub's price breakdown:
- Building the cabin: £2,700
- Materials for insulation: free
- Church pew: £100
- Space invader arcade game: £650
- Bar: £400
- Fire heater: £70
- Fridges: £100
- Signs, pictures, tankards: Around £50
Total: £4,070
Creating the cabin cost more than £4,000, but the family think they’ll save money in the long run as they won’t have to pay for pricey pints outside the house. Plus, they won’t need to book an Uber back to bed at the end of the night.
Jayne began by getting the cabin built, which cost £2,700, then having it insulated with materials donated by a friend.
Looking through social media to find budget-friendly bits, the mum-of-three managed to find a church pew for just £100.
The actual bar took around £400 to stock and build, and handily a sofa and TV were handed over for free from family and friends. Fridges were donated to keep the drinks cold while a £70 fire heater keeps guests nice and cosy in the winter.
Jayne’s biggest spend was a space invader arcade game which cost around £650 – but it’s worth it to make the Doghous Inn a must-go destination.
She said: ‘I’m always finding things for the little pub, and it’s not just become a man cave as such for Paul – I love using it too and I’d quite happily spend most nights in there.
‘It’s great to chill in and it really does feel like I’m in my local!’
