For many, Christmas represents a lawless time in the realm of food. A season of time-honoured traditions with a few unconventional indulgences thrown in.
And damn do brands know this. In recent months, we’ve seen companies including Lidl release a 6ft 5in long pig in blanket, Asda sell a pigs in blanket sausage roll, and Twisted roll out a Christmas pizza dinner with a Yorkshire pudding dipping pot. It’s culinary overkill.
The latest hybrid food to hit stores isn’t as wild, but it certainly features a food and beverage that’s in high demand at Christmas.
Lidl has just started selling a new gin-infused cheese for only £1.99.
The Wensleydale with Hortus Sloe Gin & Cranberry is infused with the supermarket’s Hortus gin which contains notes of citrus and green herb. The cheddar-like hybrid also contains dried fruit for a bit of sweetness and texture.
The crumbly dish is part of Lidl’s Deluxe Premium Waxed Truckles range, which also features Mature Cheddar & Balsamic Onion and Christmas Tree Smoked Cheddar.
The latter does actually come in the shape of a Christmas tree, so imagine that on your festive spread. A decoration and a food.
If a booze-infused cheese isn’t enough for you, you can also up the festive stakes with a Christmas gin – flavoured with ginger, cinnamon and cardamom – or create your own DIY version using this recipe.
If it’s going to be less of an alcohol-fuelled silly season, get your festive beverage fix with the Buddy the Elf Christmas Frappuccino available at Starbucks.
